Zara dekh sanam mera jazba e dil

Posted on: October 9, 2009

People who judge India by Bollywood movies and by its songs, could well assume that boys and girls in India spend most of their times meeting each other and romancing. Having grown up in India, I assure you that the facts are much different from what is depicted in these movies.

In real life, the two sexes mixing with each other is still disapproved. But hormones being what they are, the two sexes try to interact, as they do in any society. But in India, the two sexes meet each other surreptitiously, on the sly. They inform their parents that they are going for extra classes, or for some function, or to their friends (of the same gender) and then meet on the sly. Sometimes, we do have songs on this topic too, viz “main tujse milne aayi, mandir jaane ke bahaane” ( viz. I came to meet you on the pretext that I was going to the temple), which was a song from “Heera”, which incidentally is not yet posted here, or “achchaa to ham chalte hain” (Aan Milo Sajna”, which has been posted in this blog.

Here is a song from “Grihasthi” (1963) where Rajshree and Manoj Kumar meet in a garden on the sly and sing a song. It is Rajshree who sings and dances, whereas Manoj Kumar plays a mouth organ and occasionally performs what can be called an apology of a dance.

This song is written by Shakeel Badayuni and music is composed by Ravi. Credit says that the playback singer is Lata, but honestly, I find that the voice in the video does not sound like Lata’s.

The end of the song is typical. As the two come out of the garden, looking happy after their song and dance, what do they find. They find an angry looking ladki ka baap (played by Ashok Kumar) waiting near his jalopy, who was watching their song and dance all this while !

Song-Zara dekh sanam mera jazba e dil (Grihasthi) (1963) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Ravi

zara dekh sanam mera jazba e dil
mujhe aaj kahaan tak le aaya
zara dekh sanam mera jazba e dil
mujhe aaj kahaan tak le aaya
jahaan aake main khud ko bhool gayi
tera pyaar wahaan tak le aaya
zara dekh sanam mera jazba e dil

too paas rahe phir kyaa gham hai
has saans khushi ki sargam hai
o chhedne waale pyar ki dhum
ehsaan teraa ye kyaa kam hai
ehsaan teraa ye kyaa kam hai
jo geet chhupe hain mere
unhen meri zubaan tak le aaya
zara dekh sanam mera jazba e dil

ye thandi hawaayen lahraatin
rangeen fazaayen madmaati
ye thandi hawaayen lahraatin
rangeen fazaayen madmaati
main pyaar ki tere deewaani
manzil pe akeli kyaa aati
manzil pe akeli kyaa aati
mera dard e muhabbat tujhko bhi
mere saath yahaan tak le aaya
zara dekh sanam mera jazba e dil
mujhe aaj kahaan tak le aaya
zara dekh sanam mera jazba e dil
