Qaid mein hai bulbul saiyyad muskuraaye

Posted on: October 25, 2009

In the beginning of his career, Kalyanji had initially given music alone, before forming a partnership with his younger sibling, viz Anandji. “Bedard Zamaana Kyaa Jaane” (1959) is one such movie where Kalyanji gave mosic solo under the name Kalyanji Veerji Shah.

The lyricist of this song is Bharat Vyas, who in most people’s mind is typecast as a lyricist of mythological movies who mostly wrote “shudhh” Hindi lyrics. But I know for sure that he could write other kinds of songs as well. It is he who had written one of the very first comedy song in a tapori lingo which was sung and picturised on Kishore Kumar as far back as in 1952 in the movie “Tamasha”.

Here in this song, he has used “mainstream” words in a mainstream situation, viz a party song where a girl from a “respectable” family is being made to dance in a club. The urdu words like “qaid”, “Saiyyad” etc sound quite sweet and appropriate in this song, and if one was not told it beforehand, it would be difficult to guess that Bharat Vyas is the lyricist.

Lata sings this song. This song is picturised on Jabeen Jalil. Nirupa Roy, not much older than the lady plays her mother and she is seen shocked and traumatised at the information that her daughter is dancing in the club. And thus the career of a long suffering screen mother is launched. Fortunately, in her subsequent mother roles, she would only have sons and they could dance away in clubs merrily and do much more, without apparently giving her a bad name. 😉

song-Qaid mein hai bulbul saiyyad muskuraaye (Bedard Zamaana Kyaa Jaane) (1959) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Kalyanji

Lyrics

majboor hoon ke teri
mehfil mein aa gaye hain
mushqil yahi hai ab to
mushqil mein aa gaye hain

qaid mein hai bulbul saiyyad muskuraaye
qaid mein hai bulbul saiyyad muskuraaye
kaha bhi na jaaye chup raha bhi na jaaye
qaid mein hai bulbul saiyyad muskuraaye
kaha bhi na jaaye chup raha bhi na jaaye
qaid mein hai bulbul

kaisi hai duniya kaisi reet hai
aankhon mein aansoo honthon pe geet hai
kaisi hai duniya kaisi reet hai
aankhon mein aansoo honthon pe geet hai
jhanke re paayal dil hai ghaayal
zaalim zamaane kya yahi teri jeet hai
baagbaan ke hathon mein
baagbaan ke hathon mein kali kumhlaaye
kaha bhi na jaaye chup raha bhi na jaaye
qaid mein hai bulbul saiyyad muskuraaye
kaha bhi na jaaye chup raha bhi na jaaye
qaid mein hai bulbul

dhoke fareb ka parda daale
laakhon chhuepe yahaan bhanwre kaale
dhoke fareb ka parda daale
laakhon chhuepe yahaan bhanwre kaale
pyaase labon par zahri pyaale
koi kahaan tak khud ko sambhaale
mehandi lage paaon me
mehandi lage paaon me kaantaa chhubhaa jaaye
kaha bhi na jaaye chup raha bhi na jaaye
qaid mein hai bulbul saiyyad muskuraaye
kaha bhi na jaaye chup raha bhi na jaaye
qaid mein hai bulbul

Atul ji,

This song may not be sounding a typical Bharat Vyas song, for a reason.

This song is actually written by Gulshan Baawra, his debut song in Hindi movies. Albeit he did not get the credit for the same, either in the movie or on HMV’s record label.

Reference is from Hindi Film Geet Kosh, vol. 3.

Regards
Sudhir
