Koyi ladki mujhe kal raat sapne mein mili

When I was growing up in a city in 1972, a new movie hall had come up and it was showing “Seeta Aur Geeta” (1972). Its song were so wonderful to listen to that I as a pre teen kid dearly wanted to watch the movie. One fine day, I dragged my elders to the movie hall to watch this movie. And what did I see ? The movie was withdrawn the previous day, and the movie “Zindagi Zindagi” (1972) was being shown instead.
We watched that movie, and I was utterly disappoined. The movie “Zindagi Zindagi” is good on its own, and I realised that much later, but to a pre teen kid, “Zindagi Zindagi” was a bitter pill to swallow when he was expecting to have candy.
To this day, I have not watched this movie. Those days, all these conveniences of being able to watch movies of your choice any time any where in the comfort of home was non existent and the charm of watching the movie at a cinema hall at that time was irresistible. Now I have the VCD of this movie with me, but I do not feel like watching it. One covets things that are just beyond one’s reach, and that urge is no longer there. Pestering your elders to take you to the movie hall is also an experience that cannot be replicated once you grow up and you are at liberty to do that on your own.
The songs of this movie acted like pied pipers and people felt like going to the movie hall to watch the movie.
Here is one of these pied piper songs from this movie. This is a duet sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata.Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and R D Burman is the music director.
This song is picturised on Sanjeev Kumar and Hema Malini. Of course, I have gathered this information only just now when I watched the video of this song. I have yet to watch the movie, as I mentioned earlier. May be I should search for the VCD and watch it, thus fulfilling the urge of watching it that I so badly felt 37 years ago. 37 years ago, did I say ? How time has flown !

Lyrics
koyi ladki mujhe kal raat sapne mein mili
badi pyaari si soorat thi bhalaa saa naam thaa
lalalala lalalala lalal lal
koyi ladkaa mujhe kal raat sapne mein milaa
badi pyaari si soorat thi bhalaa saa naam thaa
lalalalala lala lalala
dekh leti main jo us bairan sautan ko
jaan le leti main qasam se
dekh letaa main jo us tere saajan ko
jaan de detaa main sharam se
ho phir kyun roothe
tum jo roothi
lalala
are tum hi mujhe kal raat sapne mein mili
are tum hi mujhe kal raat sapne mein mile
mujhe tumse tumhe mujhse zaroori kaam thaa
lalala lala laa lalal lal
tumhe mujhse mujhe tumse zaroori kaam thaa
chaandni thi raaten khoob huyin mulaaqaaten
pyaar bhari huyin baaten donon mein
raat bhar ham jaage nain piyaa sang laage
rang bhare huye waade donon mein
tum jhoothi ho
tum jhoothe ho
lalala
koyi ladkaa
koyi ladkaa
koyi ladkaa mujhe kal raat sapne mein milaa
badi pyaari si soorat thi bhalaa saa naam thaa
lalalalala lalalalala lalala

Indeed this is a total timepass movie and definitely worth a watch.
I had a similar experience to your experience, Atul.
In 1976, Geet Gaata Chal was running to packed audiences – my friends and I decided that the day our exams got over, we would go to watch the movie. When we reached the hall (after walking about 3 kms in the hot May sun), we found it had been taken off and “Barood” (Rishi, Shoma Anand) was showing instead. We were very disappointed. On top of it, Barood was not particularly good either.
I finally saw Geet Gaata Chal only in the year 2000 or so.

We watched Seeta aur Geeta at the Cathay Cinema in Deolali sometome in 1973 after two or three failed attempts in Mumbai (then Bombay). Deolali was a small and quiet cantonment town also known for its salubrious climate and lots of sanatoria!
Did you see Mumbai’s Juhu beach of 1970 or 1971 used for this song? It was full of palm and coconut trees that have been replaced with apartment buildings and hotels. And the horses and camels used for joy rides? Long gone!
Kishore Kumar’s voice sounds so much like Sanjeev Kumar’s. Hema Malini is so young and beautiful.
Thanks Atul for all this hard work!
