Phir koyi muskuraaya phir ek phool khilaa

Listening to music is not an objective exercise. It is a subjective exercise. And that is why different people with different mental make up have entirely different preferences as music lovers.

In my opinion, one needs to have an open mind if one wants to derive the most enjoyment from music.

Confining us to just Bollywood movie music, it would mean that one needs to appreciate different singers for their own qualities. One should not try to compare one with the other, with an aim of proving the superiority of one and the inferiority of another. Singers are not arithmetical numbers that can be compared.

I have seen people finding faults with singers, as well as eulogising some singers to divine status. We need to realise that every singer is a human being, and every human being is unique, not only in his genes and in his finger prints, but in his vocal chords and his singing as well.

Every singer has his/her own unique qualities which are his trademark, which cannot be replicated and one should not seek the same quality in others.

Mukesh is one singer who prima facie (in the opinion of those who like to make comparisons) limited in his singing abilities vis a vis some other singers of the day. As mentioned above, such comparisons are meaningless because one cannot compare two entities where subjectivity is involved.

The great strength of Mukesh as a singer was his Midas touch and his ability to express feelings through one’s voice. When one listened to Mukesh’s voice, one felt like here is one sincere and honest person who is pouring out his emotions in a simple and uncomplicated way. This ability of Mukesh, whereby he could immediately win over the sympathy of his listeners, was the secret behind his success as a singer.

Here is a song from “Apne Huye Paraaye” (1964). Here the hero is beside with joy. Now he is near his beloved and he needs to express his joy.

When one listens to this song, one can immediately identify with these feelings and in fact one can vicariously empathise with them as well.

I listened to this song for the first time only yesterday. And I was immediately impressed wit this song.

This song is written by Shailendra and music is by Shankar Jaikishan. The song is picturised as a piano song on Manoj Kumar, with his beloved Mala Sinha and another lady (who is she ? Any idea ?).

It is a beautifully sung song. It is yet another example of the Midas touch of Mukesh, which is evident in most of his songs. It is obviously a gem of a song.

PS-More than two years after discussing this song, I have now become aware of a female version of this song too, thanks to Mr Sadanand Kamath. This version is sung by Lata and its lyrics are different. This Lata solo song has been covered here.

Song-Phir koyi muskuraaya phir ek phool khilaa (Apne Huye Paraaye ) (1964) Singer-Mukesh/Lata, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm
hmm hmm
phir koyi muskuraayaa phir ek phool khilaa
koyi bulaaye aur koyi aaye ab dil chaahe kyaa
phir koyi muskuraayaa phir ek phool khilaa
koyi bulaaye aur koyi aaye ab dil chaahe kyaa
phir koyi muskuraayaa phir ek phool khilaa

zindagi phir wohi geet gungunaane lagi
is gali jhoomti phir bahaar aane lagi
phir koyi muskuraayaa phir ek phool khilaa
koyi bulaaye aur koyi aaye ab dil chaahe kyaa
phir koyi muskuraayaa phir ek phool khilaa

dil mere jhoom le yaad kar ke us shaam ko
bahke ham jis ghadi pi ke pyaar ke jaam ko
phir koyi muskuraayaa phir ek phool khilaa
koyi bulaaye aur koyi aaye ab dil chaahe kyaa
phir koyi muskuraayaa phir ek phool khilaa

honaa hai aaj phir apne sabr kaa imtihaan
lutnaa hai tumko phir aaj meraa dil meri jaan
phir koyi muskuaraayaa phir ek phool khilaa
koyi bulaaye aur koyi aaye ab dil chaahe kyaa
phir koyi muskuraayaa phir ek phool khilaa

Very nice song, Atul.
I think the other actress is Shashikala.
Btw, your comment about not trying to compare singers, trying to prove superiority/inferiority, is very true. Each one is indeed unique with his/her own qualities.
