Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Maanaa mere haseen sanam

Posted on: December 9, 2009

There was a time when I was an avid movie watcher. Those were the days when one could watch movies only at movie halls. I used to wonder whether we will even be in a position when we will be able to watch movies of our choice at home, any time of the day. My hopes were stuff of science fiction in 1970s when I thought about it, but now, three decades onwards, it has become a reality.

Those days, movies used to mean reels and reels contained in big boxes, which were moved to movie halls where they were fitted on big projector screens, and then showed. These days, one tiny DVD contains not one but even several movies. One can watch not only newer movies, but even old movies which barelyly got released in movie halls before flopping at the box office. This happy state of affairs, which is taken for granted by the younger generation, is really nothing but a dream come true for persons like me.

So what do I do when technology has made this dream come true ? Do I watch all these movies at home ? Not really. when something coveted becomes accessible, one often stops coveting it. I have hundreds of movies on VCDs/DVDs, but I regard watching the whole movies a time consuming process.

I mostly watch these movies for their songs. And I also love to watch the opening of the movie where credits are shown. The screen, where names of various assistants is mentioned is the most eagerly awaited part of the movie for me. It is here that I find out who were the assistant music directors of the movie.

For instance, I find that Laxmikant and Pyarelal were the assistants to Kalyanji Anandji in several movies from late 1950s to early 1960s. When I read this screen for movies with O P Nayyar music, I find that there are often two names, and one of the name is G S Kohli.

It is G S Kohli, who created most of O P Nayyar’s trademark music which are remembered even today.

G S Kohli too tried to become an independent music director and he got a few opportunities too. He created outstanding music in the few opportunities that he got, but most of his movies flopped and as a result, he did not get too many new offers. Overall, G S Kohli gave music as an independent music director in 14 movies or so.

In that respect, I find G S Kohli to be similar to Ganesh. Both worked in similar number of movies, and created awesome music, but their talents was not recognised and rewarded at that time. I feel sorry for these two music directors all the time.

Here is a song from “Adventure of Robinhood” (1965). Few people know the name of this movie (it was a C grade movie) but when one listens to this song, a typical remark is- “wow ! So this song is from this movie !”

This song is one of the memorable songs sung by Rafi. It is written by Yogesh. The song was picturised on Prashant and Parveen Chaudhary.

PS- Based on user feedback, I have posted the lyrics of this song in Devnagri script too. It is a time consuming process, but hopefully I will be able to make it a regular process at least for a few songs.

Song-Maana mere haseen sanam (Adventure of Robin Hood) (1965) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Yogesh, MD-G S Kohli

Lyrics

maanaa mere haseen sanam, tu rashq-e-maahtaab hai
par tu hai laajawaab to, meraa kahaan jawaab hai
maanaa mere haseen sanam, tu rashq-e-maahtaab hai
par tu hai laajawaab to, meraa kahaan jawaab hai
maanaa mere haseen sanam

hairat se yoon na dekhiye, zarraa huaa to kyaa huaa
hairat se yoon na dekhiye, zarraa huaa to kyaa huaa
zarraa huaa to kyaa huaa
apni jagah pe jaan-e-man, zarraa bhi aaftaab hai
par tu hai laajawaab to, meraa kahaan jawaab hai
maanaa mere haseen sanam

tere shabaab kaa suroor chhaayaa jo do jahaan par
tere shabaab kaa suroor chhaayaa jo do jahaan par
chhaayaa jo do jahaan par
meri nigaah-e-shauq se aayaa ye inqalaab hai
par tu hai laajawaab to, meraa kahaan jawaab hai
maanaa mere haseen sanam, tu rashq-e-maahtaab hai
par tu hai laajawaab to, meraa kahaan jawaab hai
maanaa mere haseen sanam

————————————–

This film is too much fun as well, and all the songs are wonderful. I wish I could see it with subtitles, and a better quality print.

Those are the things MY dreams are made of these days, Atul.

I cannot do much about the print quality, but I would love to provide sub titles of such movies if I had time, or if someone hired me to make it my day job.

Hi Atul,
When I was reading your posting, I felt like that I was reading my own life interest in movie music. I am sure that there are several thousands of people like us, enjoying music from such a nostalgic golden era. I used to love that song but forgot the words and only recently, I found it my collection of CD/MP3 (bought recently). I never heard of that movie, before. I was so exited, and immediately googled for it and found your posting. Thanks for uploading it. Your service is very much appreciated. Raja.
