Darshan pyaasi aayi daasi

Posted on: January 12, 2010

When I watch many movie titles and story lines of old movies, I notice that many of them could not be made today because they would be regarded as politically incorrect in these days of being politically correct. I do not think we can have songs mentioning Bombay, Madras etc nor can we describe people as Junglee, blind, langdaa etc without invoking the wrath of some group of people or the other.

The old movies were politically incorrect, but at the same time they were heartwarmingly secular. Religious songs in Bollywood movies are very good example. We have had many examples, for instance, where a Bhajan (Hindu prayer) was created almost entirely by non Hindu artists (including picturisation) and such bhajans went on to become timeless classics and began to be used in religious functions too.

The “Baiju Baawraa” bhajan song “Man tadpat hari darshan ko aaj” is a very well known example.

Here is a lovely bhajan from “Sangdil” (1952). It is composed by Sajjad Hussain, regarded as the only original music director in Bollywood movies. It is picturised on Madhubala. The song is sung by Geeta Dutt and Rajinder Krishan wrote this song. Like most songs of “Sangdil”, this song too is a wonderful example of the genius of Sajjad Hussain.

Lyrics

darshan pyaasi aayi daasi
jagmag deep jalaaye
darshan pyaasi aayi daasi
jagmag deep jalaaye
Prabhu charan ki dhool mile to
jeewan mein sukh aaye
darshan pyaasi aayi daasi
jagmag deep jalaaye
Prabhu charan ki dhool mile to
jeewan mein sukh aaye
darshan pyaasi aayi daasi

jag naiyaa ke khewanhaare
teri jyoti chaand sitaare
jag naiyaa ke khewanhaare
teri jyoti chaand sitaare
aayi paapan sharan tihaare
sadaa hi raakho apne dwaare
binti karoon main nis din tori
charanan sees lagaaye
binti karoon main nis din tori
charanan sees lagaaye
Prabhu charan ki dhool mile to
jeewan mein sukh aaye
darshan pyaasi aayi daasi
jagmag deep jalaaye
Prabhu charan ki dhool mile to
jeewan mein sukh aaye
darshan pyaasi aayi daasi

dharo na avgun dhyaan Prabhu ji
raakho meraa maan Prabhu ji
dharo na avgun dhyaan Prabhu ji
raakho meraa maan Prabhu ji
bhav-saagar ke paar lagaao
deejo ye vardaan Prabhu ji
pal pal chhin chhin paapi jeewan
daras tihaare paaye
pal pal chhin chhin paapi jeewan
daras tihaare paaye
Prabhu charan ki dhool mile to
jeewan mein sukh aaye
darshan pyaasi aayi daasi
jagmag deep jalaaye
Prabhu charan ki dhool mile to
jeewan mein sukh aaye
darshan pyaasi aayi daasi

Generally it is beleived that Jaltrang has been used to set rythm of this bhajan..In fact bells have been used for which Sajjad Sahib had to travel hundreds of miles, from one junk shop to another to find the desired set of seven bells. These bells have also been used in the back-ground music very effectively, particularly in the scene where Dalip Kumar follows Madhubla to seduce her and she enters the temple to seek the protection of Shivji. The cooling down of base sentiment is depicted by sweet sound of tinklig bells.
