Aapne chheen liyaa dil

When it comes to playback singing, especially female playback singing, Mangeshkar family of siblings rules.
The Mangeshkar siblings consist of four sisters and one brother. The sisters are Lata, Meena, Asha and Usha. Hridaynath Mangeshkar, the youngest of the siblings is their only brother.
Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle need no introduction. Even Usha Mangeshkar has sung a few well known songs ( viz songs of ” Jai Santoshi Maa”) and Hridaynath Mangeshkar has composed music in a few movies (such as “Dhanwan”).
Meena Mangeshkar is the least known among the Mangeshkar sisters. In fact the songs sung by her are quite rare to find. She sang a few songs in 1950s and that was that. She subsequently married and is now known as Meena Khadilkar.
Here is one such rare song sung by Meena Mangeshkar. This song is from “Farmaish” (1952). This song is a romantic duet sung by Rafi and Meena Mangeshkar. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist and Husnlal Bhagatram composed the music.
It is a nice song to listen to. It is indeed a rare gem.
Song-Aapne chheen liyaa dil ise kyaa kahte hain (Farmaaish) (1953) Singers-Rafi, Meena Mangeshkar, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-Husnlal Bhagatram
Lyrics
chaand saa mukhdaa jo aanchal mein chhupaa leti ho
chaand saa mukhdaa jo aanchal mein chhupaa leti ho
ik jhalak mein mujhe deewaanaa banaa deti ho
ik jhalak mein mujhe deewaanaa banaa deti ho
husnwaale isi shokhi ko hayaa kahte hain
husnwaale isi shokhi ko hayaa kahte hain
aji saahib, ise dilwaale adaa kahte hain
dekhaa karti ho hamen door se chori chori
dekhaa karti ho hamen door se chori chori
paas aate hi jhukaa leti ho aankhen gori
paas aate hi jhukaa leti ho aankhen gori

As a teenager, I had heard thing song quite often on Radio Ceylon in the morning slot. I came to know only in 70s that the female singer was Meena Mangeshkar. I like this romantic song for simplicity – both in terms of rendering and orchestration.
One of her other songs which I used to hear on Vividh Bharati was a duet with Lata ‘ Are koi jao re piya ko bulao re’ from PATRANI (1956).

Meena Mangeshkar was a well known name when I was young. These days, many people are not even aware about her existence.
