Bollywood movies of the past were like the Indian familiies of the past as far as keeping a limit on their songs/ children were concerned.
There used to be lots of songs in each movie and lots of children in each family. Government exhorted people to exercise family planning. “Bachhe do ya teen bas” viz There should be two or three kids and no more- used to be the slogan of family planning department till 1970s. In 1970s, the slogan was changed to “Ham Do Hamare Do” viz Two kids for two of us. Less specific slogans like “Chhota Pariwaar sukhi pariwaar” viz. a small family is a happy family were also in use.
Of course, no attempts were made to limit the number of songs in movies. I do not recall any films division advertisement reading “Less songs, better movie ” or “Less songs more storylines” etc. The movies used to have more than a dozen songs in every one of them.
In most cases only a few of these songs would become popular and other songs would fail to make it big. But there were exceptions when several songs from one movie would become popular. I call such movies as musical blockbusters. There have been many musical blockbusters over the decades. Most of these musical blockbusters were in the era from 1940s to 1960s.
“Afsaanaa” (1951) was definitely a musical block buster. I have posted three songs from this movie. Here is another song. This song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Veena. Asad Bhopali is the lyricist and Husnlal Bhagatram composed the music. This is a nice song to listen to from an era nearly six decades ago.

Lyrics
aaj kuchh aisi chot lagi hai
toot gayaa paimaanaa dil kaa
toot gayaa paimaanaa
koyi nahin duniyaa mein apnaa
kaun sune afsaanaa
dil kaa kaun sune afsaanaa
yaad mein jiski din beete hain
jiske sahaare ham jeete hain
jiske sahaare ham jeete hain
yaad mein jiski din beete hain
jiske sahaare ham jeete hain
jiske sahaare ham jeete hain
aaj usi ne thukraayaa hai
pyaar bharaa nazraanaa dil kaa
pyaar bharaa nazaraanaa
aaj kuchh aisi chot lagi hai
toot gayaa paimaanaa dil kaa
toot gayaa paimaanaa
kaisaa shikwaa kiski shikaayat
dekh liyaa anjaam-e-mohabbat
dekh liyaa anjaam-e-mohabbat
kaisaa shikwaa kiski shikaayat
dekh liyaa anjaam-e-mohabbat
dekh liyaa anjaam-e-mohabbat
aap hi apni aag mein jal kar
khaaq huaa parwaanaa dil kaa
khaaq huaa parwaanaa
aaj kuchh aisi chot lagi hai
toot gayaa paimaanaa dil kaa
toot gayaa paimaanaa

You are hilarious 🙂 Love the family-planning song-planning analogy!

If I made a movie, then my movie would have only one song. 🙂
