Most Bollywood songs only involve desi actors and foreigners are sadly left out. Considering that there is so much interest about Bollywood movies among non desis too, it is time they too should be made to feel at home in these movies. Gori girls in Bollywood movies too have the right to be teased and made passes at.
Long back, Bollywood did make a beginning in this neglected area. Here in this song, we find Johny Walker singing a song making passes at a gori in a swimming pool. The lady could well be our beloved Memsaab, except that she has a cat instead of a dog as a pet. This song, sung by Rafi would be a perfect teasing song if addressed to a desi lady, but the teasing stuff is seemingly lost on the gori. Hasrat Jaipuri’s Urdu stuff seemingly goes over her head. Of course, she can make out that Johny Walker is making passes at her. That is universal, and that needs no translation.
Johny Walker looks so cute and inoffensive in a song like this that he can carry off such stuff with finesse and aplomb, unlike say a Rajendra Kumar. This is a swimming pool song, and one can see Sunil Dutt too in this song, but he plays no singing part in this song.
The movie is “Ek Phool Chaar Kaante” (1960) and I know that our beloved Memsaab loves this song. She in fact has mentioned in one of her comments in this blog that she loves all the songs from this movie.
Here is this swimming pool song from “Ek Phool Chaar Kaante” (1960) which is a Rafi-Johny Walker song. As we have come to realise by now, there have been quite a few very well known and well loved Rafi-Johny Walker songs that were created in 1950s and 1960s. and this song is certainly one of them.

Song-Tirchhi nazar se yoon naa dekh (Ek Phool Chaar Kaante) (1960) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD- Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
tirchhi nazar se yoon na dekh
palat palat ke yoon na dekh
mar jaayen raahon mein dil waale
tirchhi nazar se tu na dekh
tirchhi nazar se yoon na dekh
palat palat ke yoon na dekh
mar jaayen raahon mein dil waale
tirchhi nazar se tu na dekh
o haseen jalpari
aankh hain surma bhari
chaal se baras rahin hain mastiyaan
yoon nazar utha na tu
aise muskura na tu
dil pe gir padengin laakh bijliyaan
aashiqon mein ham to hain inhein
palat palat ke yoon na dekh
mar jaayen raahon mein dil waale
tirchhi nazar se tu na dekh
ye to hai kamaam hai
ismein laakh baan hai
chal gaye to sabki jaan jaayegi
husn ki ye mehfilein
ishq ki ye manzilen
sooni sooni phir to rah jaayegi
dil mera Indian make
palat palat ke yoon na dekh
mar jaayen raahon mein dil waale
tirchhi nazar se tu na dekh
raahi tere waaste
bhool rahe hain raaste
tujhko paana ik haseen khwaab hai
tu hai phool pyaar ka
geet hai bahaar hai
husn waale tera kya jawaab hai
mit rahaa hai koi tujhpe to koi khel
palat palat ke yoon na dekh
husn waale tera kyaa jawaab hai
mar jaayen raahon mein dil waale
tirchhi nazar se tu na dekh
tirchhi nazar se yoon na dekh
palat palat ke yoon na dekh
mar jaayen raahon mein dil waale
tirchhi nazar se tu na dekh
tirchhi nazar se yoon na dekh

ROFL…what a wonderful intro to this song, Atul.
Indeed, this could very well have been our memsaab. 😉
What a delightful song this is. Rafi saab for Johnny Walker is anyway usually gold (I just love Johnny Walker !) and this song is no exception. You feel like it is Johnny Walker singing in his own voice.
And the lyrics are nice too. “Dil mera Indian-make”. Lol.
Thanks for posting this lovely song – and with a lovely intro. 🙂
