Do chamakti aankhon mein kal khwaab sunahraa thaa jitnaa

Posted on: June 7, 2010

I have posted a few songs from “Detective” (1958) in this blog. This is not a movie I know too much about, but I am discovering that this movie was full of memorable songs.

Here is another song from this movie. I heard this song for the first time only yesterday, and that too when I received a farmaish for this song from Ravi, a new reader of this blog.

Here is this wonderful song from “Detective”. It is sung by Geeta Dutt and it is picturised on Mala Sinha. Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Mukul Roy who was also the brother of Geeta Dutt.

What a wonderful song it is ! I thank Ravi for making me aware of this song.

Song-Do chamakti aankhon mein kal khwaab sunahraa thaa jitnaa (Detective) (1958) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics- Shailendra, MD-Mukul Roy

Lyrics

do chamakti aankhon mein
kal khwaab sunahraa thaa jitnaa
haay zindagi teri raahon mein
aaj andheraa hai utnaa
do chamakti aankhon mein
kal khwaab sunahraa thaa jitnaa
haay zindagi teri raahon mein
aaj andheraa hai utnaa

ham ne sochaa thaa jeewan mein
phool chaand aur taare hain
kyaa khabar thi saath mein inke
kaante aur angaare hain
ham pe qismat hans rahi hai
ham pe qismat hans rahi hai
kal hanse the ham jitnaa
do chamakti aankhon mein
kal khwaab sunahraa thaa jitnaa
haay zindagi teri raahon mein
aaj andheraa hai utnaa

itne aansoo itni aahen
dil ke daaman mein lekar
jaane kab tak chalnaa hogaa
sooni sooni raahon par
ae muqaddar ye to bataa de
ae muqaddar ye to bataa de
mujhko sahnaa hai kitnaa
do chamakti aankhon mein
kal khwaab sunahraa thaa jitnaa
haay zindagi teri raahon mein
aaj andheraa hai utnaa
do chamakti aankhon mein
kal khwaab sunahraa thaa jitnaa
haay zindagi teri raahon mein
aaj andheraa hai utnaa

I only speak English (and French, but that doesn’t help either) so I do not understand the words, but I still find this one of the most beautiful and mesmerising songs ever! I have two questions:
1)Can anyone please translate the words for me?
2)Am I right in thinking the tune is based on an old Jamaican theme also made famous by Harry Belafonte as ‘Kingston Town’ – they are so similar there must be a connection!
Thanks!

Only the tune of Mukhda seems to be matching with ‘Jamaican Farewell’
