Ambar ki ek paak suraahi

Posted on: June 14, 2010

In Bollywood, most movie makers tend to make mainstream movies which tread the same beaten track and are full of popular masaala ingredients viz songs, dances, fights, romance, comedy etc.

Then there are some movie makers who make movies that have different story lines. Such movies would often struggle to find financiers. Such movies tended to be small budget movies made with small time actors.

Such movies began to be called parallel cinema movies or art movies in 1970s. Common public kept away from such movies and many of these movies did not even get released properly, because movie halls would refuse to screen them.

“Kaadambari” (1975) was definitely one such movie. It had Vijay Arora and Shabana Ajmi in lead roles. One could not have found a more boring pair than this pair in a Bollywood movie those days. Little wonder that few people have heard of this movie.

Not just the movie, the music of this movie was equally “boring”. The movie makers had signed up a classical musician, namely Ustad Vilayat Khan as the music director, thus ensuring that the aam janta kept off the music of this movie as well.

Now, well over three decades later, when I have supposedly acquired “taste” for such music. 😉 Here is a song from this movie. Personally, I had never heard this song before, but it appears that Peevesie’s Mom, a regular visitor of this blog, had heard this song, when this movie was released in 1970s. It is on her farmaish that I am posting this song.

So here is this song, that is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Shabaa Azmi. Amrita Preetam, who was a well known author of Hindi/Punjabi, is the lyricist, and as earlier mentioned, Ustad Vilayat Khan is the music director.

Here is this rare song from “Kadambari” (1975).

song-Ambar ki ek paak suraahi baadal ka ek jaam (Kadambari) (1975) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Amrita Pritam, MD-Ustaad Vilaayat Khan

Lyrics

aaaa aaaa aaaa aaaa

ambar ki ek paak suraahi,
baadal kaa ek jaam uthaa kar
ambar ki ek paak suraahi,
baadal kaa ek jaam uthaa kar
ghoont chaandni pi hai hamne,
baat kufr ki ki hai hamne
ambar ki ek paak suraahi,
baadal kaa ek jaam uthaa kar

kaise iskaa karz chukaayen
maang ke apni maut ke haathon
kaise iskaa karz chukaayen
maang ke apni maut ke haathon
umar ki choli see hai hamne,
baat kufr ki ki hai hamne
ambar ki ek paak suraahi,
baadal kaa ek jaam uthaa kar

apnaa isme kuchh bhi nahin hai,
apnaa isme kuchh bhi nahin hai,
kuchh bhi nahin hai,
do dil jalte
do dil jalte uski amaanat
usko wohi to di hai hamne,
baat kufr ki ki hai hamne
ambar ki ek paak suraahi,
baadal kaa ek jaam uthaa kar
ambar ki ek paak suraahi,
baadal kaa ek jaam uthaa kar

I wonder why all the B grade movies had such excellent music!

Of course, one really cannot call a movie in which Shabana Azmi stars to be a B grade movie, but being politically correct, we can call it “parallel cinema”.

The most unfortunate and ironical aspect of the B grade movie being neglected by the masses is that, the music, often excellent, also tends to get ignored and forgotten in due course of time.

Thanks a million for excavating these gems from the sands of time and presenting them. God knows how many such treasures still lie buried under the debris of ignorance and non nonchalance.

Please do correct the words in these lines:-
kaise iskaa karz chukaayen / maang ke apni maut ke haathon
umar ki CHOLI sii hai hamne.

Further, the correct words are:-
do dil jalte uski amaanat
usko WOHI to di hai hamne.

Thanks, love your site.

Lets face it ! these songs are rare. And anyway its not that everyone understands such rare songs. I have quite a few collection on these kind of songs. Happy to note that there are few who love these songs.

the 2nd stanza does not have the right words of the original poem by amritapritam…

It is not “do dil jalte…”

it is.. “rozey ya jalsey uski amanat usko wahi to di hai hamne.. ”
Rozey = days of fasting, Jalsey = days of celebration….makes sense right?
the rest of what you have written is correct – thanks.

I would like to make a correction in the lyrics of this great song. In second stanza the correct words are ” roz e azal se uski amanat.” ( the day of beginning ) instead of ” do dil jalte”. Hope you will make correction,

Didn’t know that this song was posted here till today!! It is one of best songs sung by Asha Bhonsle. After hearing the song and seeing the film(in the 70s!!) I rushed to Rhythm House to buy the record. Sadly, they only had the LP which only had Khan Sahab’s music not the song. In the 80s when Harmandir Singh came to Ahmedabad, I asked him whether an EP was issued with this song. He wasn’t aware of it. As luck would have it HMV released a 2 pack cassette set around that time which had this song.Later, I heard it in Anmol Phankar too. Now here with lyrics, comments, et al. Many many thanks.
