on:Here is a song that is nearly sixty years old, but it sounds as fresh as ever.
This song is “thandi hawaayen lahraa ke aayen” from “Naujawaan” (1951). The song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Nalini Jaiwant. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist and S D Burman composed the music.
What a delightful song it is ! It is a song with simple lyrics and soft, unobtrusive music that has the ability to make the listeners feel relaxed even today.

Lyrics
aaa haa haa haa
aa haa haa haa aaa
lalalala
hmm hmm hmm
kaise bulaayen
thandi hawaayen, laharaake aayen
rut hai jawaan, tumko yahaan, kaise bulaayen
thandi hawaayen, laharaake aayen
rut hai jawaan, tumko yahaan, kaise bulaayen
thandi hawaayen
aaa haa haa haa haa
aa haa haa haa haa
lalalalala
hmm hmm hmm
kaise bulaayen
chaand aur taare, hanste nazaare
milke sabhi, dil mein sakhi, jaadu jagaayen
thandi hawaayen, laharaake aayen
rut hai jawaan, tumko yahaan, kaise bulaayen
thandi hawaayen
kaise bulaayen
kahaa bhi naa jaaye, rahaa bhi naa jaaye
tumse agar, mile bhi nazar, ham jhenp jaayen
thandi hawaayen, lahraake aayen
rut hai jawaan, tumko yahaan, kaise bulaayen
thandi hawaayen
aaa haa haa haa
aa haa haa haa
lalalala
hmm hmm hmm
kaise bulaayen
dil ke fasaane, dil bhi naa jaane
tumko sajan, dil ki lagan, kaise bataayen
thandi hawaayen, lahraake aayen
rut hai jawaan, tumko yahaan, kaise bulaayen
thandi hawaayen
hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm
kaise bulaayen

this super classic popular tune of SD was copied by roshan for his composition for the song “tera dil kahan hai,sab kuch yahan hai” from “chandni chowk”(1954) which acquired a mediocre success.
but it became a smash hit when he recycled this tune again after 12yrs. for “mamta”(1966) for the song “rahen na rahen hum”

I love this song. It is indeed a very soft, pleasant song to listen to. I believe this was the song that got Sahir to be noticed as a lyricist in Hindi movies.

It is said that during the rehearsal of this song, S D Burman (SD) was not happy with start up with the song ‘Thandi hawaien….’. In the meanwhile, C Ramchandra (CR) walked into the recording studio and met SD when latter told him about his problem. After listening to the tune, CR suggested to start the song with ‘Ha ha ha ha ha……….. . SD gladly accepted his suggestion.

I love this song. My mother used to sing this, and it brings back such lovely memories. It is perfect for listening at night, when everything is quiet and the music is soft and soothing. Thanks for this song, Atul!
