Meri duniyaa lut rahi thi aur main khaamosh thaa

Posted on: July 28, 2010

I have posted several songs from “Mr and Mrs 55” (1955) but I was not aware that this song was from that movie. Somehow this song to my mind did not belong to this movie.

Here is this poignant song “meri duniyaa lut rahi thi aur main khaamosh thaa” from “Mr and Mrs 55”. It is sung by Rafi and chorus. The picturisation shows Guru Dutt passing by when some people start singing this song in a desi daaru joint. The lyrics written by Majrooh Sultanpuri are outstanding. Conveying the emotions being felt by the hero through a song sung by others instead of by a song sung by the hero himself- I think this method is more effective, at least in this song.

If I was not aware, I would have difficulty believing that music of this song is composed by O P Nayyar. But then this movie had come in 1955, and O P Nayyar had yet to develop his characteristic style of music composition which he developed next year, from “CID” onwards.

Here is this superb song from “Mr and Mrs 55” (1955).
PS-Any idea who are the actors on whom this song is picturised ?
It is Rashid Khan. I thank Veena Seth for making this identification.

Lyrics

aaa
meri duniyaa lut rahi thi
aur main khaamosh thaa
meri duniyaa lut rahi thi
aur main khaamosh thaa
tukde tukde dil ke chuntaa
tukde tukde haan haan
tukde tukde dil ke chuntaa
kis ko itnaa hosh thaa
meri duniyaa lut rahi thi
aur main khaamosh thaa
meri duniyaa lut rahi thi
aur main khaamosh thaa

aaa
aankh mein aansoo na the
aur jal rahaa thaa dil jigar
ro rahi thin hasraten
chup-chaap thaa main bekhabar
arre
kaise aataa
haay
kaise aataa hosh mein
jo pahle hi behosh thaa
kaise aataa hosh mein
jo pahle hi behosh thaa
tukde tukde dil ke chuntaa
tukde tukde haan ji
tukde tukde dil ke chuntaa
kis ko itnaa hosh thaa
meri duniyaa lut rahi thi
aur main khaamosh thaa
meri duniyaa lut rahi thi
aur main khaamosh thaa

aaa
ye haqeeqat hai
ise samjhe naa afsaanaa koyi
aaa
ye haqeeqat hai
ise samjhe naa afsaanaa koyi
jab lutaa kooche mein ise
jaake dilwaalaa koyi
aji ye zameen
ye zameen chup-chaap thi
aur aasmaan khaamosh thaa
ye zameen chup-chaap thi
aur aasmaan khaamosh thaa
tukde tukde dil ke chuntaa
Tukde Tukde haan haan
Tukde Tukde dil ke chuntaa
kis ko itnaa hosh thaa
meri duniyaa lut rahi thi
aur main khaamosh thaa
meri duniyaa lut rahi thi
aur main khaamosh thaa

aaa
kaarvaan
kaarvaan dil kaa lutaa baithaa hoon
manzil ke qareeb
main ne khud kashti dubo di
jaake saahil ke qareeb
kyaa main kartaa
kyaa main kartaa
main sharaabe ishq se madhosh thaa
kyaa main kartaa
main sharaabe ishq se madhosh thaa
tukde tukde dil ke chuntaa
tukde tukde haan haan
tukde tukde dil ke chuntaa
kis ko itnaa hosh thaa
meri duniyaa lut rahi thi
aur main khaamosh thaa
meri duniyaa lut rahi thi
aur main khaamosh thaa
meri duniyaa lut rahi thi

Thanks for the link. I saw this for the first time. Totally agree with the write up, except that this is a “qawwali”. One of the few genuine qawwali’s by OPN.

Atul ji,
The song is picturised on an actor called AGHA HAROON.
Rashid Khan was NOT in the film and does not feature in credit listing too.

Inspiration for this qawwali was the one recorded by Kallan Khan Qawwal of Secunderabad in 1936:
