This is a song from “Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai” (1960) whose farmaish was given to be posted as a patriotic song on the occasion of the independence day.
I do not think it is a patriotic song as such. It is a song that describes the characteristics of India and Indians, and it was written in 1960 in an era when Indias were more idealistic and less cynical about the affairs of the country. So it is song about a place, viz about India.
This song is sung by Mukesh and it is picturised on Raj Kapoor. The picturisation shows Raj Kapoor in the midst of dacoits of Chambal valley and there he sings this song about the country that India is.
Shailendra is the lyricist and music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.
This song is easily one of the most memorable iconic songs from Hindi movies.
PS-This song also has another part of the song, which plays at the end of the movie. Lyrics of this part II has now been provided by Sudhir jee. He has also provided lyrics for one missing para in part I.

Just saw your update now Sudhir Ji, as I was housekeeping on the Yippeeee! movies so far :).
Yippeeee! another movie joins the ranks of movies where all songs are covered in the movie. We are now at 184 Yippeeee! Movies, so we just have 16 more movies to go to hit a double ton :).

Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Despite what Atul says, I would consider this as a “patriotic song”, on par with vandE mAtaram. While vandE mAtaram describes the physical attributes of India, this song from Shailendra talks about the philosophical bent of India; albeit an India of 60’s, but nevertheless truly India.
Atul, you could have a category of such songs – “Shailendra and his philosophy”!
