It is practically impossible to talk of actors or hit films of Bollywood of the early 70s and not speak of Rajesh Khanna in the same breath. He was synonymous with Bollywood hit movies at that time and though other heroes did manage a few hits between them, he was THE towering figure amongst them all at that time.
Shakespeare, in his classic Julius Caesar, has Cassius, in a conversation with Brutus, talking of Caesar as “he doth bestride the narrow world like a Colossus’. Well, in the early 70s in Bollywood, Rajesh Khanna was that Colossus.
The meteoric rise he had, after Aradhana, had to be seen to be believed. I often talk of that period as the “Rajesh Khanna wave”. I got it wrong. It was more like a tsunami. It swept everything before it.
And I consider myself fortunate to have been witness to it and not have to only read about it second-hand.
The Rajesh craze was so all-encompassing that he carried movies purely on his own name. He acted in a variety of roles, including unconventional ones in films like Haathi Mere Saathi, Baawarchi and even a cameo in the tear-jerker Anuraag.
Of course, one of the fallouts of a successful movie is often that its songs becomes chartbuster hits too. Songs in Rajesh movies were no exception. Kishore Kumar, the voice of Rajesh from Aradhana onwards, delivered hit after hit picturised on Rajesh.
In those days of Rajesh superhits, a movie was released – Dil Daulat Duniya (1972). It did average business, certainly nowhere close to most other Rajesh hits of the period. In fact, a lot of people do not even know about this film.
When I saw this movie years ago, I liked it a lot. Ok, I am a sucker for Rajesh movies of that period anyway but even to a neutral follower (and I admit I am no neutral when it comes to Rajesh), this movie will come across as a sweet movie. The songs are lovely too, if not that well-known.
Significantly, the songs are composed by Shankar Jaikishen. Considering this was released in 1972, the songs were probably composed by Shankar alone (Jaikishen having died by then) and released under the S-J banner. Also, the songs have been written by Shaily Shailendra, the son of legendary lyricist and longtime S-J partner, Shailendra. This adds a degree of sentiment to the songs.
Here is one of the songs of the movie. I think it was the most popular song of the movie at that time.
I like it a lot and hope you enjoy it too. Rajesh looks oh-so-handsome!!!

Song-Saath mein pyaaraa saathi hai (Dil Daulat Duniya) (1972) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Shaily Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
Saath mein pyaara saathi hai
raat bhi ye madmaati hai
aise mein ab tum hi kaho
neend kisey kab aati hai
saath mein pyaara saathi hai
raat bhi ye madmaati hai
aise mein ab tum hi kaho
neend kisey kab aati hai
saath mein pyaara saathi hai
saaya bhi jinkaa kal tak
rehta thaa door hum se
kyun paas aa gaye wo
poochhe na koi hum se
saaya bhi jinkaa kal tak
rehta thaa door hum se
kyun paas aa gaye wo
poochhe na koi hum se
aah
saath mein pyaara saathi hai
raat bhi yeh madmaati hai
aise mein ab tum hi kaho
neend kisey kab aati hai
saath mein pyaara saathi hai
poonam ke chaand jaisi
bharpoor ye jawaani
uthti hai dekh jisko
dil mein umang deewaanee
poonam ke chaand jaisi
bharpoor ye jawaani
uthti hai dekh jisko
dil mein umang deewaanee
aah
saath mein pyaara saathi hai
raat bhi ye madmaati hai
aise mein ab tum hi kaho
neend kisey kab aati hai
saath mein pyaara saathi hai
jee chaahey aaj tujh ko
seeney se main lagaa loon
hon na judaa kabhi phir
saanson mein yoon basaa loon
jee chaahey aaj tujh ko
seeney se main lagaa loon
hon na judaa kabhi phir
saanson mein yoon basaa loon
aah
saath mein pyaara saathi hai
raat bhi ye madmaati hai
aise mein ab tum hi kaho
neend kisey kab aati hai
saath mein pyaara saathi hai
raat bhi yeh madmaati hai
aise mein ab tum hi kaho
neend kisey kab aati hai
neend kisey kab aati hai
neend kisey kab aati hai
neend kisey kab aati hai

Another lovely Rajesh-Kishore number, right up there IMO, in a ‘My favorite romantic songs of Rajesh Khanna’ listicle. This film is also a favorite of mine. Here are some stills from the sets during the shooting of this song.
