Krishnaa O Kaale Krishnaa

This post is written by Raja, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor of posts to this blog

In an earlier post (O meri praan sajni Champaawati aajaa (Annadaataa) ), I had talked about standard templates for songs in Hindi movies.

Well, one of the scenes in Hindi movies that lends itself very easily to a template is the “prayer” song.

Now , the prayer song can take different forms.

It can be a prayer in praise of the Lord. Like “Jai Bhole naath, Jai Ho Prabhu”.

Or it can be a request or even a complaint to the Lord. There are plenty of songs where, when disaster strikes, the character remembers God and rushes to the temple or other place of worship and pours out his or her grief, hoping for some divine intervention.

The prayer itself can be to a variety of deities since Hindus pray to a whole lot of them.

So , it can be Ram or Krishna or Shiv Bhagwan or Hanuman or another.

It does not really matter what the prayer form is or who the deity is. What is important is the display of faith in a superior being.

This usually goes down very well with the Indian public since a vast majority of the public is God-fearing anyway. Any visit to a temple or place of worship in India is proof of this fact.

Having so many deities also has another side to it. It means Indians have that many special occasions , in addition to their daily routine, to pray to these deities. So we have Ram Navmi, Janmashtami, Shivaratri, Ganesh Chaturthi etc.

Yesterday was Janmashtami – an occasion to remember and celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna.

On this occasion, it is opportune to present a song on Lord Krishna on this blog.

Here is “Krishnaa O Kaale Krishnaa” by Lata Mangeshkar from “Main Bhi Ladki Hoon” (1964). This may not be one of her best-known songs but it is really nice to listen to.

It is not a song in Lord Krishna’s praise, it is a complaint to Him.

Meena Kumari has a dark complexion and is discriminated against because of this. She then goes to Lord Krishna, himself dark-skinned, to complain about her plight.

Lyrics

Krishna
O kaale Krishnaa
Krishna
O kaale Krishnaa
toone ye kyaa kiya
kaisa badlaa liyaa
rang deke mujhe apnaa
Krishna
O kaale Krishnaa
toone ye kyaa kiya
kaisa badlaa liyaa
rang deke mujhe apnaa
Krishna
O kaale Krishnaa

poojen sabhi kaale Bhagwaan ko
aur thukraayen sab kaale insaan ko
poojen sabhi kaale Bhagwaan ko
aur thukraayen sab kaale insaan ko
bansi ki dhun mein magan tu rahe
bansi ki dhun mein magan tu rahe
tujhko kyaa zulm laaken (??)
jo koi kahe
Krishna
O kaale Krishnaa
toone ye kyaa kiya
kaisa badlaa liyaa
rang deke mujhe apnaa
Krishnaa
O kaale Krishnaa

soorat to kaali chhupaa na sakoon
kitna ujlaa hai dil ye dikhaa naa sakoon
soorat to kaali chhupaa na sakoon
kitna ujlaa hai dil ye dikhaa naa sakoon
dil mujhko achha diyaa thaa agar
dil mujhko achha diyaa thaa agar
kyun na di toone duniya ko achchi nazar
Krishnaa
O kaale Krishnaa
toone ye kyaa kiya
kaisa badlaa liyaa
rang deke mujhe apnaa
Krishna
O kaale Krishnaa
