Rafi is today a legend of Hindi movie music but he too was a struggler for much of 1940s. It was only from 1946 onwards that he began to get songs to sing.
One of the first music directors who was keen to give Rafi an opportunity to sing was C Ramchandra in “Saajan” (1947). But there was a problem. Ashok Kumar, the hero of the movie, was into singing his own songs those days. In addition, Ashok Kumar was a co owner of the production house (Filmistan Studio) that was producing this movie. So C Ramchandra was not really in a position to get his way by getting Rafi to sing for Ashok Kumar.
Then one day, when this song was to be recorded in Ashok Kumar’s voice, a riot took place in Bombay. C Ramchandra, sensing his chance , ensured that Rafi was present that day. Ashok Kumar did not turn up, but the other co owners, Shashdhar Mukherji (Joy Mukherji’s father) and Raibahadur Chunnilal (Madan Mohan’s father) turned up and they asked C Ramchandra to go ahead and record the song in Rafi’s voice.
Now C Ramchandra waited for Ashok Kumar’s reaction with bated breath. When Ashok Kumar heard the song, he liked it very much. In fact, he asked C Ramchandra that another song, which was already recorded in Ashok Kumar’s voice, be re- recorded in Rafi’s voice.
This was a big moment for Rafi, and this song became the first hit song of his career. In this song, he sounds like the Rafi that we know today, otherwise in earlier songs, he was restrained to sing in the then prevalent style of singing in a subdued manner.
This song “hamko tumhaaraa hi aasraa” has one solo (Rafi) version and a duet version (on Rafi and Lalita Dewoolkar). Here are both the versions of this rare gem from “Saajan” (1947).Moti B A is the lyricist and as mentioned above, C Ramchandra is the music director.

Lalita Deulkar, later married Sudhir Phadke. Recently an article appeared in the website http://www.mohdrafi.com regarding Rafi and Lalita. I am reproducing the gist of the article :
“Mohammed Rafi has sung the Holy “Mangalashtake” (wedding rhymes) in Marathi in the wedding of Sudhir Phadke & Lalita Deulkar in the year 1949. ”
