Mehfil meri raaten meri

Golden era of Hindi movie music saw an embarrasment of riches in musical talent. So much so that several highly talented musicians of the era never got their proper due.
We are all familiar with the names of famous music directors, but even the less famous music directors were just as talented as the famous names. Makers of B and C grade movies, who could not afford highly priced music directors, would hire lesser known music directors and the music created by them would be just as good as any. “A grade music in C grade movie” is an oft repeated phrase in this blog to describe the outstanding music of these unfancied and unheralded music directors.
Ganesh was one of the lesser known music directors who deserved much better than the measly 17 movies where he got to work as music director.
What music he has created in these limited opportunities ! Out of the 87 songs that he created in these 17 movies, I have heard some 30 odd songs and most of them are outstanding songs, and I am sure the the remaining songs too, when I get to listen to them, will be in the same league.
Ganesh, who was a younger brother of Pyarelal (of Laxmikant Pyarelal fame) mostly worked in B and C grade movies, and also in an A grade movie called “Sharaarat” (1972). I have so far posted 29 songs composed by Ganesh in this blog, and each one of them is a gem ! And no, I am not exaggerating.
Here is another song composed by Ganesh. This song is from a C grade movie called “Badnaam”. It is a bar dance song. It is sung with gusto by Asha Bhonsle and the dance is performed with aplomb by Laxmi Chhayaa, a dancer whom I have begun to admire thanks to gushing writeups of Greta (Memsaab) about her.
The song is written by Naqsh Llayalpuri.
Make no mistake. This song is a difficult song to sing and a difficult dance to perform and both Asha Bhonsle and Laxmi Chhayaa have made short work of their assignments.
Here is this fantastic song from “Badnaam” (1975), which is yet another feather on the cap of Ganesh as a music director.
Song-Mehfil meri raaten meri (Badnaam) (1975 ) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Naqsh Llayalpuri, MD-Ganesh
Lyrics
mehfil meri
raaten meri
duniya karen baaten meri
sheeshe di jaawaani
aankhen meri
soniyaa
nashe diya botalaan
we aankhen soniyaan
nashe diyaa bolalaan
mehfil meri
raaten meri
duniya karen baaten meri
sheeshe di jaawaani
aankhen meri
soniyaa
nashe diya botalaan
we aankhen soniyaan
nashe diyaa bolalaan
ek tu hi nahin mera
hoy
laakhon hain aur bhi mere
deewaane
mehfil meri
raaten meri
duniya karen baaten meri
sheeshe di jaawaani
aankhen meri
soniyaa
nashe diya botalaan
haan
we aankhen soniyaan
nashe diyaa bolalaan
tu behisaab
na pea sharaab
zid hai kharaab
haan chhod de
zid chhod de
tu behisaab
na pea sharaab
zid hai kharaab
haan chhod de
zid chhod de
mere haathon se
haay
mere haathon se
paimaanaa leke tod de
mere haathon se
paimaanaa leke tod de
ho raja
mehfil meri
haan haan
raaten meri
haan haan
duniya karen baaten meri
sheeshe di jaawaani
aankhen meri
soniyaa
nashe diya botalaan
haan
we aankhen soniyaan
nashe diyaa bolalaan
ghunghroo ka saaz
gaaye ye geet
naadaan si seekh(?)
kis kaam ki
kis kaam ki
ghunghroo ka saaz
gaaye ye geet
nadaan si seekh(?)
kis kaam ki
kis kaam ki
duhaayi degaa
haay
duhaayi degaa
dil teraa mere naam ki
duhaayi degaa
dil teraa mere naam ki
we Raja
mehfil meri
haan haan
raaten meri
haan haan
duniya karen baaten meri
sheeshe di jawaani
aankhen meri
soniyaa
nashe diya botalaan
we aankhen soniyaan
nashe diyaa bolalaan
ek tu hi nahin mera
hoy
lakhon hain aur bhi mere
deewaane
mehfil meri
raaten meri
duniya kare baaten meri
sheeshe ki jawaani
aankhen meri
soniyaa
haan
nashe diya botalaan
we aankhen soniyaan
nashe diyaa bolalaan

And I was surprised myself that I could identify her ! All that indoctrination about her in your blog seem to have worked. 😀

Laxmi is my absolute favourite. The most charming smile ever. And a fantastic dancer.
This is a real nice song. I heard it many times not so long ago when I was helping Tom out on his Laxmi Chhaya DVD project.

No, it was not on that DVD. It was on the shortlist (I even remember doing subtitling in English 🙂 ) but it not get onto the final DVD. Tom had to make some tough choices – there was just so much Laxmi quality out there. Besides I think he did not have the original VCD/DVD anyway and did not want to lift it off the net.
