Aahen na bharin shiqwe na kiye
Posted on: September 27, 2010
Most well known qawwalis in Hindi movies are from 1950s and 1960s. But the earliest hit qawwali is older than that.
Perhaps the first hit qawwali in Hindi movies in from “Zeenat” (1945). This qawwali is sung entirely by females. The singers are Noorjahaan, Zohrabai Ambalewaali and Kalyani. I am not very familiar with the actors on whom this song is picturised, but I can guess that one of them has to be Noorjahaan herself. And I can detect a very young looking Shashikala too in the picturisation. I request my knowledgeable readers to help identify the other actors in the picturisation.
PS-I am informed that this picturisation also had Cuckoo and Shyama (12 years old).
The lyrics is written by Nakshab. Music is composed by Meer Sahib. Though some souces attribute the music to Meer Saheb as well as Hafeez Khan.
Here is this fantastic qawwali from “Zeenat” (1945) which has the distinction of being the oldest among all the well known qawwaalis of Hindi movies.
PS-It has been informed by Mr Sadananad Kamath that the record mentions the name of Hafeez Khan. So that settles it for this song.

In fact, Zohrabai Ji is also one of the ladies here!Noorjehan is not seen here she is playback singing for Rehana 1st jhatka queen of hindi films.

Atul ji,
It is true that there were 2 MDs in Zeenat.
5 songs out of the total 8 songs were composed by HAFIZ KHAN and this Qawali, which boasts of being the FIRST EVER all female qawali in films, was composed by HAFIZ KHAN alone. The other MD was Meer Sahib.
Incidently, the background music of Zeenat was given by RAFIQ GAZNAVI.
Rachana ji has rightly identified all the stars in the song.
Please note that CUCKOO was about 3 year old at the time this song was filmed,so there is no question of her being in the song at all.

Cuckoo was definitely not 3 years here and you can see her very clearly caressing Noorjehan in the wedding song “Dulhan ban jao”.
In fact Cuckoo had a full dance picturised on her in “Laila Majnu” and “Pehli Nazar” both released in 1945

Sami ji,
Thanks for pointing out that she was not 3 year old.I didnot note that instead of mentioning her age as 13,only 3 was typed,by mistake.
What you say about her Pehli Nazar is right, but she was not in Laila Majnu or Zeenat definitely.Even the Credits of both these films do not mention her name, nor has any discussion on this qawwali has ever mentioned her name anywhere,as far as I know.
Actually, she became noticeable only after Andaz and then there was no looking back.

Very grateful to those who laboured so hard to collect these videos of very very old songs.
Cheers!

Atul ji,
As pointed out by Arun ji in an earlier comment made more than 3 years ago, The MD of this song is Hafiz Khan alone. HMV record No.N.26681 has accredited this song to ‘Hafiz’ only.
Please carry out corrections in the post as well as in the tag.

There were many Kalyani(s) viz.Kalyani Bai, Kalyani Das, Kalyani Singh, Kalyani Mitra, Kalyani Menon and only Kalyani. Which one was in this qawwali and which are her other contributions as singer ?
