“Sharmilee” (1971) was one of those movies that I lived a lot. This movie and its songs came about at a time when Kishore Kumar and R D Burman had taken the Hindi movie music world by storm. I also happened to be at an impressionable age (8-12 year age group) which meant that I was highly impressed and influenced by the music of that time. Forget me, even the so called grown ups turned out to be just as impressionable as me, as far as liking Kishore Kumar-R D Burman brand of music was concerned.
Come to think of it, this song neither had Kishore Kumar not R D Burman in it. This song is sung by Lata and it is composed by S D Burman.
Well, for most people, including me, S D and R D were synonymous. Many of the S D Burman songs bore the stamp of R D Burman. Many of the well known S D Burman songs were indeed composed by R D Burman. In any case, S D Burman was one of the few (only ?) oldtimer who survived the R D Burman Tsunami which swept away most oldtimer music directors of the time.
I liked the songs of this movie, especially the ones that were sung by Kishore Kumar. I “tolerated” the songs of this movie that were sung by Lata.
Here is this song from “Sharmilee” (1971) which is sung by Lata. It is picturised on Rakhi whom I find far less tolerable. 😀
Neeraj is the lyricist of this song.
The song itself is a superb song, even though I as an impressionable kid was not in a position to appreciate it at that time.

But Atul you’ve got to admit Rakhi has beautiful eyes–the most beautiful I’ve ever seen in fact.
My favorite song is Khilte hain gul yahan(Kishore)–can’t take my eyes off that charmer Shashi. Everything is fantastic.
