on:“Sharmilee” (1971) was a Subodh Mukherji production movie. It was directed by Samir Ganguly. The movie had Shashi Kapoor, Rakhi, Nazir Hussain, Narendranath, Ranjeet, Uma Dhawan, Dulari, Asit Sen, Anita Dutt, Kundan, Iftekhar, Rashid Khan, Jayshree T, Krishnakant etc in it.

“Sharmilee” (1971) was one of those movies that I lived a lot. This movie and its songs came about at a time when Kishore Kumar and R D Burman had taken the Hindi movie music world by storm. I also happened to be at an impressionable age (8-12 year age group) which meant that I was highly impressed and influenced by the music of that time. Forget me, even the so called grown ups turned out to be just as impressionable as me, as far as liking Kishore Kumar-R D Burman brand of music was concerned.

My memories of Sharmilee (1971) are associated with my seeing this movie on my first-ever visit to Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1972. I have described some of my experiences of that visit on the post relating to the song “khilte hain gul yahaan”.

on:Rajesh Khanna’s superstardom owes a good deal to the fact that Kishore Kumar was the playback singer for him. In fact, the next superstar viz Amitabh Bachchan too owes it to Kishore Kumar’s voice for much of his popularity.
