I have noticed that older Hindi movies (early 1950s and before) were far more liberal and open minded than the movies that followed. For instance, many scenes that began to be looked down upon as against Indian culture (viz kissing, swimming etc) were quite common in earlier movies. Not just that, hypocritical stands like heroines refusing to do swimming scenes is a recent phenomenon of 1970s because it was considered “exposing” their bodies. The fact that the heroines who took such stand did not have exposable may also have influenced their stand.
I admire those heroines who had no qualm doing swimming scenes. I thought that such swimming costume donning heroines came up in 1960s, but I am wrong. It began one decade earlier.
Here is a lovely water song from “Sangram”(1950) where Ashok Kumar and Nalini Jaiwant are shown frolicking in water. It is the first time I have seen Nalini Jaiwant as well as Ashok Kumar “exposing” 😀 and the results are quite good.
The song is a wonderfully hummable song sung by Lata and C Ramchandra. Brajendra Gaur has written this song and C Ramchandra is the music director.
What a gem of a song it is, and its picturisation is far ahead of its time.
