Hindi movies called “Dost” seem to get released every decade. The first such movie was “Dost” (1944) and it had memorable music by Sajjad Hussain. In my days, another movie by this name, viz “Dost” (1974) was released which had memorable music by Laxmikant Pyarelal. There was no movie by this name in 1964, though there was a movie called “Dosti” (1964), which again had memorable songs composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
There was another movie called “Dost” in 1950s. This movie, which was released in 1954 is not all that well known, and even its music has been forgotten, but the music of this movie is also in the same league as the music of the same names and realesed in other decades.
Hansraj Bahl was the music director and Verma Malik was the lyricist of “Dost” (1954) and together they created some wonderful melodies in this movie. Hansraj Bahl had introduced a female singer called Madhubala Jhaweri (not to be confused with Madhubala the actress) in one earlier movie. He used her voice in “Dost” (1954) as well.
Here is a lovely duet from this movie. It is sung by Madhubala Jhaweri and Talat Mehmood. I first became aware of this song only just now, and I liked this song the very first time I listened to it.
