Kajraari matwaari madbhari do ankhiyaan

Posted on: December 22, 2010

“Naubahaar” (1952) was a musical blockbuster and critics continued to rave about the songs of this movie for decades. I, who disliked old songs as a pre teen kid had also read about the songs of “Naubahaar” in 1970s.

By now, my likings have undergone a sea change obviously. The bulk of songs discussed in this blog are now from this very decade of 1950s which I could not stand in 1970s ! How time changes people !

Here is a superb semi classical song from “Naubahaar” (1952). This song is sung by Rajkumari.Shailendra is the lyricist and music is composed by Roshan.

I am not clear about the picturisation. I wonder who is the dancer on whom this song is picturised and who is the lady who lip syns this song. I also wonder why Ashok Kumar is looking so pained in this picturisation. Is this song picturised as a Mujra song ?

These are so many of my queries. I hope my knowledgeable readers who are familiar with this movie will be able to explain to me what is going on. In the meanwhile enjoy listening to this nice song (sung by Raj Kumari) and nice dance (performed by a till now unknown dancer).

PS- From the ffedback of readers(Prakash Chandra and Sudhir), we now know that the actress lip syncing the song is Kuldeep Kaur and the dancer is perhaps Rama, who was a debutant to Hindi movies.

Song-Kajraari matwaari madbhari do ankhiyaan (Naubahaar) (1952) Singer-Rajkumari, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Roshan

Lyrics

kajraari matwaari madbhari do ankhiyaan
piyaa tori do ankhiyaan
kajraari matwaari madbhari do ankhiyaan
piyaa tori in ankhiyan mein baith ke maine
dekhi sab duniyaa
piyaa tori do ankhiyaan
kajraari matwaari madbhari do ankhiyaan
piyaa tori do ankhiyaan

jaise neel kamal ki kaliyaan
jaise bhanwar matwaare
preet ki anjaani nagri ke
do anjaane taare
rang ras ki galiyaan
piyaa tori matwaari madbhari do ankhiyaan
kajraari matwaari madbhari do ankhiyaan
piyaa tori do ankhiyaan

chapal nain chaplaa jin chamke
chandr kor si lach lach lachke
adhar dharat pag dharan dharat
in naachat hai brijnaari

ta that tidha didhi thai
ta that tidha didhi thai
ta that tidha didhi thai

teri ankhiyan mein chanchal saagar
doob ke tar gayaa jiyaraa
doob ke tar gayaa jiyaraa
tore nainan ke neel gagan mein
kho gayaa meraa hiyaraa
kho gayaa meraa hiyaraa
main khojoon din ratiyaan
piyaa tori
matwaari madbhari do ankhiyaan
kajraari matwaari madbhari do ankhiyaan
piyaa tori in ankhiyaan mein baith ke maine
dekhi sab duniyaa
piyaa tori do ankhiyaan
kajraari matwaari madbhari
madbhari do ankhiyaan
piya tori kajraari matwaari
madbhari do ankhiyaan
madbhari do ankhiyaan
madbhari do ankhiyaan
madbhari do ankhiyaan

The name of the lady with veena and sings the song is famous artist, KULDIP KAUR. I am 100% sure about that.

I remember Kuldeep Kaur in “Baiju bawra”(1952)( in a dacoit princess role, who kidnaps bharat bhushan and later loves him, I remember it very vaguely)and
“Sahara”(1958)(in a negative role, errrrrrr no no I think she is there in that film, But I am not sure about the role)

Further, I searched for the name of the dancer, but in the credits of the film only other female names mentioned are nalini jaywant and sunalini devi. She is not Nalini jaywant, I have seen her many films, But I have not seen sunalini devi in any other films, May be It is “Sunalini devi”, I am not very sure, It is pure blind man`s imagination.

I am very weak in identifying actresses of the past, but it does not seem like Kuldeep Kaur to me since I mostly know her in negative roles.

My gut feeling says that it is KULDEEP KAUR, she has to be Kuldeep kaur

You are right, she has got masculine appearance(sorry for the langauage), and appeared mostly in negative roles.

In my childhood days, I have seen a morning show of Baiju bawra with my aunt, I am in 4th standard I think, I thought that Kuldeep kaur as a male actor(her dress in that film also like that only). During my college days I saw the movie again and again thruough video, then I came to know that dacoit`s role was performed by a female actress. Don`t laugh at me for my gender sense.

But, in Naubahaar, the lady who sings is Kuldeep kaur, I am 100% sure, wrong hua to, mera confidence ki chutti ho jaayegi.Heeee heeee.

Prakash ji is right, this is Kuldeep Kaur.
Albeit the dancer is likely not Sunalini Devi, but possibly an actress by name Rama, for whom this is the first movie.

The song situation is as follows. Ashok (Ashok Kumar) is the son of a very rich man, but is blind. No amount of treatment has helped. Ashok is artistic, plays wonderful flute and is a very good sculptor; he can replicate a figure in clay only by touching it once. Ashok meets Rani (Nalini Jayawant), daughter of a gardener, and they fall in love.

Ignorant of this blossoming relationship, Ashok’s father is trying to get Ashok settled in married life. The day of this song is Ashok’s birthday; his father reasons with him to stay home and get ready for the party on this occasion. Ashok’s father has invited one of his business friends and his family. This friend has a daughter, Kamala (Kuldeep Kaur), and the expectation is that an alliance may happen between the two.

In the scenes just before the song, Kamala does display a negative character, expressing displeasure at being brought to a party for a blind man. And of all the things, she brings a present which is the form of two eyes made of gold and pearls for Ashok. On hearing about the gift, Ashok feels sad and insulted (starngely no one else in the gathering shows any reaction – but that is filmi license).

Then this song comes about, Kamala is singing a song about eyes, which makes Ashok more and more uncomfortable. That is reason he is seen as so pained in the picturization.

Sudhir ji / Atul ji,
The dancer in this song,in my opinion is NARMADA SHANKAR,who was a qualified dancer from Sachin Shankar’s troupe. She entered in films as a dancer and has danced from 1950 to 1960 in many films. Some of the films are gunjan,Afsana,Mayurpankh, sakshi gopal etc.Later she swithed over to character roles, like in Joru ka Ghulam etc.
You can see her distinctly in a solo dance of Mayurpankh in a famous Lata song,’main jo chalun Paschim,Poorab chale duniya’.
