29th december is the birthday of Rajesh Khanna, who was the most influential actor of the era when I was growing up in late 1960s-early 1970s. On this occasion, I will discuss a few songs picturised on Rajesh Khanna that have not yet been discussed here.
Rajesh Khanna appeared in an All India talent search contest. He won that contest and his prize was to act as hero in two movies. These movies were “Aakhri Khat” (1966) and “Raaz” (1967). He then acted in movies like “Bahaaron Ke Sapne” (1967), “Aurat” (1967) etc.
He became a star, in fact a superstar, in 1969, when “Aradhana”(1969) was released. After that, he ruled over Hindi movies for the next four-five years, before he finally lost his crown in mid 1970s to another contemporary, namely Amitabh Bachchan.
Now, some four decades after Rajesh Khanna took the nation by storm, his magic still survives, especially among those who are into nostalgia and who love the kind of movies in which Rajesh Khanna appeared.
Music played very important roles in the success of Rajesh Khanna movies. The songs of his movies are remembered tro this day. I have discussed several of these songs in this blog. Still ther are many more songs that are not yet discussed.
Most of the playback for Rajesh Khanna has been done by Rafi and then Kishore Kumar. But it does not mean that others singers have not sung for Rajesh Khanna. Mukesh has sung for him as has Manna Dey.
Few people may be aware that Mahendra Kapoor too has sung for Rajesh Khanna. Mahendra Kapoor sang for Rajesh Khanna in “Bandhan”(1969). This was in the phase just before his superstardom.
Here is a song from “Bandhan” (1969) which is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and it is picturised on Rajesh Khanna, with Mumtaz also visible in the picturisation.
