Haseenon ki sawaari hai

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie songs and a regular contributor to this blog.
Atul ji has already posted two hand rickshaw songs, both of them performed by Mehmood. Here is a third song in this category, in which the rickshaw puller is Joy Mukherjee and the lady passenger is Sadhna. The movie is Love In Simla.
Released in 1960, this movie has a lot of good songs (some are already discussed on this blog). Lyricist is Rajendra Krishan and music is composed by Iqbal Qureshi. Qureshi is another of those talented composers who produced some very memorable tunes, but never got the due recognition for his work.
Love In Simla is a romantic comedy (what else, coming from the production banner of S Mukherjee 🙂 ). Joy Mukherjee is visiting a family in Simla, for the purpose of matrimonial alliance. The host family has two daughters, and he is supposed to get engaged to one of them (Azra). Predictably, he falls in love with the other sister (Sadhna), and the movie is about sorting out this confusion.
This song is when Joy Mukherjee has started courting Sadhna, unbeknownst to rest of the family. In the video clip, at one point, these two are seen by the other sister Azra, to her utter confusion and annoyance. The picturization of this song is simply superb. The shooting is done in summers in the picturesque lanes of Simla, and as Joy Mukherjee pulls the rickshaw along the roads of Simla, one is treated to the beautiful landscape and scenery of this hill station, as it was fifty years ago. (Getting to Simla now one will not be able to see such peaceful views).
So enjoy this beautiful ride and the sublime views of the hills of Simla. And of course, the wonderful and fun composition of this song. The singing so beautiful is by Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur.

What a lovely song. And a lovely write-up too.
I’ve heard this song before but it was somewhere in my sub-conscious.
I’ve never been to Simla but having seen it in so many old Hindi movies, I feel like going there. But, like Sudhir says, it is probably not going to be anything like what it looked 50 years ago, so I better not have high expectations.
Maybe that is one reason I enjoy watching old movies. They let me escape from today’s real world for a bit and let me enjoy the good things of the 1960s. Yes, I’m an escapist, I know but it makes me feel good even if I’m living in a make-believe world. 🙂
Thanks, Sudhir, for this lovely song and write-up.

Raja ji
🙂 Thanks,
The feelings are much the same with me. And please don’t think it is escapism. We are nothing without our past. For the past is a value that will define the culture of future. And for that reason alone, it is imperative that we save it, and nurture it and honor it; and effort that is so well being served by this blog. One day, the industry will wake up to the true art, and then this treasure will be invaluable.
🙂
