Balmaa jaa jaa jaa

Posted on: May 3, 2011

The more number of songs I discover, the more I realise how less I know about the great musical gems. And that is the case when I have already discussed over 3800 songs !

Here is a song that I have discovered only just now. This song, created 60 years ago, and discovered by me only just now is pure magic. It is sung by Lata and it was obviously picturised on Madhubala, seeing that this song is from “Aaraam” (1951), a Madhubala-Dev Anand starrer.

Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Anil Biswas. And what stunning music. Tabla beats are divine, as are the other musical instruments that play unobtrusively in the background while Lata’s voice magically transports the listeners to the era when melody ruled.

This song is a creation of sheer genius and ingenuity.

Song-Balmaa jaa jaa jaa (Aaraam) (1951) Singer-Lata,Lyrics-Prem Dhawan,MD-Anil Biswas

Lyrics

baalamwaa naadaan
aaa aaa aaa
baalamwaa naadaan
samjhaaye na samjhe dil ki batiyaan
baalamwaa naadaan
baalamwaa naadaan
ho naadaan
ho naadaan
balmaa jaa jaa jaa
balmaa jaa jaa jaa
ab kaun tujhe samjhaaye
o balmaa jaa jaa jaa
o balmaa jaa

o balmaa jaa jaa jaa
balmaa jaa jaa jaa
ab kaun tujhe samjhaaye
o balmaa jaa

ek rat ki mehfil hai ye jhoom le o mastaane
ek rat kii mehfil hai ye jhoom le o mastaane
dekh shamaa par aa kar kaise marte hain parwaane
dekh shamaa par aa kar kaise marte hain paravaane
jee ke marnaa mar ke jeenaa pagle tu kyaa jaane
o balmaa jaa jaa jaa
balmaa jaa jaa jaa
ab kaun tujhe samjhaaye
o balmaa jaa jaa jaa
o balmaa jaa

Atul ji,

What a melodious discovery; I am hearing this song after such a looooong time. You used the right word – ‘stunning’ for the composition.
Lovely song.

My feelings exactly. I’ve heard this song here after decades. I only remembered the refrain. Anil Biswas’s mastery on orchestration can be seen, and this is the young Lata’s voice the whole nation fell in love with! I’ve just discovered your blog, Atul; all I can say is, many many thanks and good wishes.
