Ek do teen chaar aur paanch

Many of the songs of Hindi movies deal with rather “advanced” topics viz Husn, Ishq,Pyaar,bewafaayi etc. Youngsters and those young at heart often much prefer songs that deal with much simpler topics, viz topics dealt in their schools, such as alphabets, arithmetics etc. 🙂 There may be school kids who would disagree with me, but there is no denying the fact that songs that deal with A,B,C (or their Hindi/urdu equivalent) or “ek do teen” often become quite popular.
Here is one of the earliest “ek do teen” song which is from a well known movie though I became familiar with this song only a few days ago. This song is from “Kaaghaz Ke Phool” (1959). It is sung by Geeta Dutt and it is picurised on Waheeda Rehman and a few kids. Waheeda Rehman is a teacher and she is teaching numbers to the school kids in this song. In the song, she assigns personalities to various numbers and describes how the numbers deal with each other. The numbers are not in good terms with each others and they are constatntly at loggerheads with each other. One, the smallest number, finds himself ignored. He goes out and neets zero, which is regarded even more insignificant by others. The two join forces and become ten. Other numbers feel jealous of them and hatch schemes to separate them.
this cute number story is written by Kaifi Azmi. The story does not just tell of numbers. Through them, Waheeda Rehman basically recounts the story of her own life.
This song, which surprisingly is a largely unknown song, deserves to bemuch better known.S D Burman is the music director of this song.
