Mere chandaa mere nanhe
Posted on: May 16, 2011
When one watches a movie which is particularly powerful and deals with human suffering, I for one cannot bear to watch it. Forget watching such movies, I find myself unable to watch the relevant songs from such movies as well.
I became aware of the story of “Aakhri Khat” (1966) thanks to its review in Memsaab’s story blog. There is this small kid less than two years old, who is separated from his mother (who has died) and is without a shelter.Rajesh Khanna, the father, is desperately searching for the kid. How one’s heart will not melt at such a scenario. No wonder I have never been able to think of watching this movie.
This sad melancholic song, where Indrani Mukherji, the mother pines for her missing child, is sung by Lata at her heart rendingly best. Kaifi Azmi’s lyrics very eloquently express the feelings of a mother whose child has gone missing. Khayyam has composed the music.

Song-Mere chanda mere nanhe (Aakhri Khat) (1966) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Khayyam
Lyrics
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
mere chandaa
mere nanhe
mere chandaa
mere nanhe
tujhe apne seene se kaise lagaaun
sooni godi mein kaise uthaaun
mere chandaa
mere nanhe
tujhe apne seene se kaise lagaaun
sooni godi mein kaise uthaaun
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
chhup gaye laadle aanchalon mein
raat pariyon kaa paighaam laayi
aa aa aa
chhup gaye laadle aanchalon mein
raat pariyon kaa paighaam laayi
kis tarah so gayaa tu akelaa
kis tarah bin mere neend aayi
mere chandaa
mere nanhe
tujhe apne seene se kaise lagaaun
sooni godi mein kaise uthaaun
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
tere sapne mein aa to gayi main
apni majbooriyaan kyaa bataaun
aa aa aa aa
tere sapne mein aa to gayi main
apni majbooriyaan kyaa bataaun
boond bhi tan mein baaqi nahin hai
bhookh teri main kaise mitaaun
mere chandaa
mere nanhe
tujhe apne seene se kaise lagaaun
sooni godi mein kaise uthaaun
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
aadmi bhi hai Bhagwaan bhi hai
phir bhi phirtaa hai tu besahaaraa
kaun tujh ko gale se lagaaye
pattharon kaa hai ye shahar saaraa
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
mere chandaa
mere nanhe
tujhe apne seene se kaise lagaaun
sooni godi mein kaise uthaaun
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
door jaanaa hai nanhe musaafir
raaste mein kahin thhak na jaanaa
aa aa aa aa
door jaanaa hai nanhe musaafir
raaste mein kahin thak na jaanaa
thaam ke meri aahon ki dori
dhoondh le tu hi apnaa thikaanaa
mere chandaa
mere nanhe
tujhe apne seene se kaise lagaaun
sooni godi mein kaise uthaaun

Thanks for this lovely song! When Kaifi Azmi and Khayyam join together, it is always a deadly melodious trip to the beautiful mental area we call serenity. Atul, you hunt these gems, bring them here, and take us back nostalgically. Shukriya!

But it is one of the best movies I have ever seen, Atul 🙂 Heart-wrenching, true…but just so beautifully done. And the songs…spectacular.

Your review as well the comments on this review tell me that I will not be able to sit through the movie, despite knowing fully well that it was just a movie. It may have neen just a movie, but the thought of a young kid without a shelter in this world is heart rending at any time and place. Come to think of it, I would not like that to happen to any kid, be it a human kid or otherwise.
