I just stumbled upon this fantastic clip. This has to be one of the loveliest song situatios in an Hindi movie.
The movie is “Jawaab” (1942). P C Barua has found shelter in Kanan Devi’s home. He is unable to sleep. When Kanan Devi comes over to enquire the reason for his insomnia, he explains that he cannot sleep unless he can hear a song on gramophone, which his servant used to play at his place. Please bring your gramophone, so that I can listen to a song on it, he asks her.
We are not rich enough to afford gramophone. Should I sing you a song, Kanan Devi asks. You will sing me a song. Can you sing like a gramophone song ? P C Barua asks, ridicule writ large on his voice. I cannot claim to sing as well as a gramophone, but I will try what I am capable of, Kanan Devi says. O K, go ahead and try, P C Barua says mockingly.
Kanan Devi sings a para, which to a listener sounds like a nightingale singing. If P C Barua is surprised, he hides it well. After singing a para, Kanan Devi asks him how was the song. Um, well, not bad, he says, not prepared to give credit.
Well then, now please try to go to sleep. I am leaving, she tells him. No no, please continue singing, that may help me sleep, he tells her.
And then Kanan Devi proceeds on to sing the full song.
What a fantastic singing, sans any orchestra ! If I ever feel insomniac and need a female to sing me a song, it will have to be the lovely Kanan Devi. What lovely voice, and what cute expressions !
I find this song, (thanks to its picurisation ) incredibly romantic and innocently sensuous. This song is written by Pt Madhur. Kamal Dasgupta is the music director.
Here is this fantastic song that I have fallen in love with after I first watched in just now.
chhup naa jaanaa
chhup naa jaanaa
ae chaand chhup naa jaanaa
ae chaand chhup naa jaanaa
jab tak main geet gaaun
ye saaz zindagi kaa jee bhar ke main bajaaun
ae chaand chhup naa jaanaa
thheek hai to
unh hmm
ae chaand chhup naa jaanaa
udtaa huaa ye panchhi
bhoole se idhar aayaa
udtaa huaa ye panchhi
bhoole se idhar aayaa
anjaan ke is ghar ko apnaa hai ghar banaayaa
ye chup ke neend soye
ye chup ke neend soye
main khwaab banke aaun
ae chaand chhup naa jaanaa
jab tak main geet gaaun
ae chaand chhup naa jaanaa
kaisi adaa thi jis pe aankhen huyin deewaani
kaisi adaa thi jis pe aankhen huyin deewaani
ye dil dimaag duniyaa sab ban gaye kahaani
ik raat kaa ye kissaa
ik raat kaa ye kissaa
main umra bhar sunaaun
ae chaand chhup naa jaanaa
jab tak main geet gaaun
ye saaz zindagi ka
main bajaaun
ae chaand chhup naa jaanaa
My, what a wonderful song. So simple, and so simply presented. It is this simplicity that is overpowering. Musical accompaniment is minimal, and the singing voice commands its presence so effortlessly. The words, the music, the situation – oh so well done. Just beautiful.
A beautiful song !
Reminded me of the past , when I was a school boy and fell in love with the song and the artist named Jamuna.
Thanks for reviving my memories of past !
