Saanwariyaa prem ki bansi sunaa

With time, I have become a big fan of K L Saigal and an even bigger fan of Kanan Devi (if that is possible). To the delight of fans like me, the two of them worked together in a few movies, where they acted and sang together.
“Street Singer” (1938) is one such movie. I am sure this movie must have been a big rage during the time it was released. The movie had the biggest names of the Hindi movie industry at that time. Names like K L Saigal, Kanan Devi,Jagdish, Rekha, Vikram Kapoor, Subeer etc figured in this movie.
The movie had fantastic songs in it that were sung wonderfully well by the two maestroes. I have discussed three songs from this movie, but there are still several more songs that need to be discussed.
Here is a lovely duet from this movie. It is sung by K L Saigal and Kanan Devi and it is picturised on the two. Aarzoo Lucknowi is the lyricist. R C Boral is the music director.
During the time the songs of this movie were released, watching the movie must have been the only affordable way to listen to these songs. Record players were hugely expensive, and Radio was in its infancy and was just as expensive. So enjoying music those days was not as simple and easy as it is today.
So, let us count our blessings and thank our stars that we are able to savour such divine music at our home, that was beyond the reach of all but the select few for much of the past history. And what a fantastic treat for the senses this song is !

Song-Saanwariyaa prem ki bansi sunaa (Street Singer) (1938) Singers-K L Saigal, Kanan Devi, Lyrics-Aarzoo Lucknowi, MD-R C Boral
Lyrics
saanwariyaa prem ki bansi sunaa
aanwariyaa prem ki bansi sunaa
patli-patli zaraa si bansi
bade-bade gun gaaye
saat suron ke pher badal se
saare raag bajaaye
saanwariyaa prem ki bansi sunaa
saanwariyaa prem ki bansi sunaa
nirmohi ko roop dikhaaye
mohi ko tarsaaye
munh par daal ke kaali kamaliyaa
din ko raat banaaye
saanwariyaa prem ki bansi sunaa
saanwariyaa prem ki bansi sunaa
man ke dhyaan se radhaa raani
lambi daud lagaaye
man ke dhyaan se radhaaraani
lambi daud lagaaye
mathuraa se
mathuraa se gokul tak jaaye
darshan kar laut aaye
mathuraa se gokul tak jaaye
darashan kar laut aaye
laut aaye phir jaaye
laut aaye phir jaaye
laut aaye phir jaaye
laut aaye phir jaaye
bansi sunaaye
bansi sunaaye
bansi sunaaye
bansi sunaaye
bansi sunaaye

You have rightly mentioned that when this “movie were released, watching the movie must have been the only affordable way to listen to these songs.” This was a fact of life in those days. Watching a movie several times just for its songs was the “in” thing to do. Same was the case with plays, specially Gujarati plays in Mumbai (then Bombay) at the Bhangwadi theater at Kalbadevi where patrons would sit in “victorias” on the road to listen to songs (not less than 13-14 in each play). This was in vogue until radio came along!
