“Nartaki” (1940) is a movie that had Pankaj Mullick, Leela Desai, Jagdish Sethi, Wasti etc in it.
I have discussed one song from this movie in the past. Here is another song from this movie. This song is apparently sung by a singer called Radha Rani. The song is picturised on Leela Desai. Though she has a rather western appearance, she plays an Indian devout lady of yore, it would seem to me.
The song exhorts people to close their eyes and concentrate (perform dhyaan) instead of letting their minds wander.
The song is written by Aarzoo Lucknowi (also known as Munshi Aarzoo). Pankaj Mullick, who also acted in this movie, is also visible in the picturisation after the song ends.
The conversation between Leela Desai and Pankaj Mullick after the end of the song is serious but may sound funny to modern movie watchers. In Parsi theatre style, Leela Desai, who has fallen down because of weakness and is unable to stand on her own, enquires who Pankaj Mullick is. on being assured by him that he is a celibate (Brahamchaari), she concludes than he, in that case may be allowed to let her pull off the ground. Apparently, only celibate men could touch her . 🙂
Here is this very old and forgotten song from a forgotten movie. I must say I am quite impressed with the powerful voice of the singer. I request my knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its characters.

NARTAKI was a costume drama set in the 16th century.
In the kingdom of Champa,famous and beautiful dancer Roop kumari (Leela Desai) is denied entry in a Monastery of Gyananandji,where only bachelors(bramhacharies)live and meditate.Angered by the insult,Roop kumari seduces the son and heir apparent of the head,Gyananandji-who is Satya sunder.While acting of love,she rally falls in his love.When this affair is known to the head,Satya sunder is thrown out,meets with accident and is nursed by the dancer Roop kumari.Finally,true love triumphs.
