“Dharti Mata” (1938) is a musical extravaganza of its time. It has several songs sung by K L Saigal in it.
Here is a song from this movie that I had not heard before. This song is basically a song about the Almighty who has created this world and everything in it.
The song is written by Pt Sudarshan. Music is composed by Pankaj Mullick.
Song-Kis ne ye sab khel rachaayaa (Dharti Mata) (1938) Singer-K L Saigal, Lyrics-Pt Sudarshan, MD-Pankaj Mullick
Lyrics
kis ne
kis ne,
kis ne ye sab khel rachaayaa
kis ne ye sab saaj sajaayaa
apne aap sabhi kuchh karke apnaa aap chhupaayaa
apnaa aap chhupaayaa,
kis ne
komal komal pyaare paudhe
komal komal pyaare paudhe
dhaan-paan matwaare paudhe
inke oopar aakar chhidki rang-roop ki maayaa
inke oopar aakar chhidki rang-roop ki maayaa
apne aap sabhi kuchh karke apnaa aap chhupaayaa
apnaa aap chhupaayaa,
kis ne
andhere mein sote thhe ye bilkul besudh hote the ye
andhere mein sote thhe ye bilkul besudh hote the ye
neend kuri ke madmaaton ko neend se aan jagaayaa
neend kuri ke madmaaton ko neend se aan jagaayaa
apne aap sabhi kuchh karke apnaa aap chhupaayaa
apnaa aap chhupaayaa,
kis ne
haraa-bharaa gulzaar khilaa hai
sarson kaa sansaar khilaa hai
dekh-dekh man mein sukh howat, ankhiyan noor samaayaa
dekh-dekh man mein sukh howat, ankhiyan noor samaayaa
apne aap sabhi kuchh karke apnaa aap chhupaayaa
apnaa aap chhupaayaa,
kis ne
kis ne

It is one of the finest songs depicting the goings on in nature. Nature is here in a primary mode and not secondary. It is not a means to instigate or depict the human moods or activities but occupies center stage of the song. This trend was to be found in the beginning of film songs in Hindi. All the pioneering lyricists, including Pt. Sudarshan, Pt. Narottam Nagar, Pt. Indra, Bhushan Pandit and even Pt. Dina Nath Madhok seem to have been great nature-lovers and were quite capable of placing man in the neighborhood of nature, enjoying equal importance, a trend that gradually weakened and but for occasional revival in Sahir Ludhiyanvi and Narendra Sharma, song was dominated by the human emotions and social problems. The dominance of nature coincided with the dominance of word over sound which gradually slipped in favor of sound with the advent of people like C.Ramchandra, quamar Jalalabadi and Rajender Krishan and by and by, nature went into the background.
