Jhooloongi jhooloongi

“Shakuntala” (1943) is easily a milestone movie in the annals of Hindi movies. It was the very first movie of Rajkamal Chitramandir that V Shantaram had founded. This was the first time that V Shantaram collaborated with Vasant Desai as music director and Jayshree as the leading lady. He in fact fell in love with Jayshree and married her during that time. This movie was a big success and our resident expert Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh informs us that this movie had run for 104 weeks (viz two years) in a single movie hall namely Swastik Cinema of Bombay.

Curiously enough, Madan Mohan, who later made his mark as a music director, acted in this movie. It will be interesting to find out what role he played in the movie.

Coming to the songs of this movie, Jayshree, who played the title role, sang her own songs. I have already discussed a few such songs. Here is this nice “jhhoola” song from “Shakuntala” (1943). From the picturisation, and from what I recall of the story that I had read in my younger days, Shakuntala has got married to King Dushyanta (played by Chandramohan) through the secret wedding process called Gandharva vivaah and this song sees the two of they seated in a jhoola and Jayshree singing this song.

Ratan Piyaa is the lyricist. Music is composed by Vasant Desai. I have no idea about this lyricist called Ratan Piyaa who wrote a few songs in this movie.

Atul ji,
ABHIDNYANA SHAKUNTAL is such an interesting story that Kavi Kalidas himself once said:
Kaavyeshu Naatakam ramyam
tatra ramya Shakuntalam
tatrapi chaturthonkstatra
shlok chatushtam.
which means (roughly) that, all poems and dramas are interesting, but amongst them shakuntala is the most interesting.Even in Shakuntala, the fourth act is attractive and in that act,the fourth shloka is the Best !
The fourth act describes the reunion of Shakuntala with her husband, finally.
