Deewaanaa aadmi ko banaati hain rotiyaan

Most Hindi movies and their songs deal with rather more evolved topics viz love, romance etc. But one cannot think of such things on an empty stomach. And unfortunately there are still lots and lots of people who do not know where their next meal is going to come from.
Topics like hunger and poverty are normally not discussed in Hindi movie songs, but there are exceptions.
Here is a song from “Kaali Topi Laal Roomaal” (1959). This song actually talks about “Roti” and the fact that there are many people for whom food is uppermost in their mind because they are unable to feed themselves.
This poignant song is sung by Rafi and it is lip synced by Agha. the picturisation shows Agha (accompanied by a shell shocked Kumkum) finding what people are forced to do for the sake of the stomach.
This song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and its music is composed by Chitragupta.
I became aware of this song only recently when its lyrics was sent to me by nahm.

Lyrics (Provided by nahm)
deewana aadmi ko banaati hain rotiyaan
deewana aadmi ko banaati hain rotiyaan
khud nachti hain sab ko nachaati hain rotiyaan
nachaati hain rotiyaan
deewana aadmi ko banaati hain rotiyaan
booddha chalaaye thhele ko phaakon se jhool ke
bachcha uthaaye bojh khilone ko bhool ke
bachcha uthaaye bojh khilone ko bhool ke
dekha na jaaye jo
dekha na jaaye jo so dikhaati hain rotiyaan
dikhaati hain rotiyaan
deewana aadmi ko banaati hain rotiyaan
deewana aadmi ko banaati hain rotiyaan
baithi hain ye jo chehre pe mal ke jigar ka khoon
duniya bura kahe inhe par main to ye kahoon
duniya bura kahe inhe par main to ye kahoon
kothe pe baith wo
kothe pe baith aankh ladaati hain rotiyaan
ladaati hain rotiyaan
deewaana aadmi ko banaati hain rotiyaan
deewaana aadmi ko banaati hain rotiyaan
kehta thha ek faqeer ke rakhna zara nazar
roti ko aadmi hi nahin khate bekhabar
roti ko aadmi hi nahin khate bekhabar
aksar to aadmi ko
aksar to aadmi ko bhi khaati hain rotiyaan
khaati hain rotiyaan
deewaana aadmi ko banaati hain rotiyaan
deewaana aadmi ko banaati hain rotiyaan
tujh ko patey ki baat bataaun main jaaneman
kyun chaand par pahunchne ki insaan ko hai lagan
kyun chaand par pahunchne ki insaan ko hai lagan
insaan ko chaand mein
insaan ko chaand mein nazar aati hain rotiyaan
nazar aati hain rotiyaan
deewaana aadmi ko banaati hain rotiyaan
deewaana aadmi ko banaati hain rotiyaan
khud naachti hain sab ko nachaati hain rotiyaan
nachaati hain rotiyaan
deewaana aadmi ko banaati hain rotiyaan

That is right. Majrooh was one of the most original and inspired lyricist of hindi films. He worked with almost all major Music Director, except maybe Shankar-Jaikishan.

Fabulous lyrics, thanks Nahm, for sharing.
What imagery and form Majrooh has imparted to the everyday roti!
`roti ko aadmi hi nahin khate bekhabar
roti ko aadmi hi nahin khate bekhabar
aksar to aadmi ko
aksar to aadmi ko bhi khaati hain rotiyaan
khaati hain rotiyaan.’

Atul ji,
KALI TOPI LAL RUMAL(1959) was an ordinary movie but became a high grosser only because of good songs.Produced by Janata Chitra and directed by Tara Harish(he himself was a Hero and played various roles in movies of 40s),the cast consisted of Chandrashekhar,Shakila,Kumkum,Naina,Agha,K.N.Singh etc.
Chandrashekhar’s story is very interesting. He was from a Barber’s family in Hyderabad. He saw big dreams of films and ran away from house at the age of 16,leaving a letter for his father, that he will only return to Hyderabad when he earns so much that he will come only by Plane ! This,he actually did, just before his father died.
The story of film revolved around two friends Shankar and Raja, who love Champa and Rani each.Rani’s vagabond jail bird brother comes and spoils the game.Shankar loses memory, runs away, regains Yad dasht, punishes Jaggu the jailbird and film ends on a happy note.
There were many fights and stunts. This was also the FIRST picture of SHETTY(the takloo),as an independent Fight Master with separate name in the credits.
Chandrashekhar was a good organiser and did pioneering work in building an Union of Film Workers.A group of Telugu speaking artists, including Waheeda Rehman,Jairaj,Johnny Lever,Shankar(of S-J) etc. were his associates.
Chandrashekhar stopped working in films in 2000.

Thanks for this information. Chandrashekhar may not have been great as a hero, but he certainly was a great behind the scene man, as can be seen from the details given by you.
