Main ik raja hoon tu ik rani hai

Posted on: July 3, 2011

1971 was a year when old order was changing, giving way to new. Many newcomers made their first appearances in this year or thereabouts. Most of them fell by the wayside, but a few of them managed to hold on and later they established themselves in the industry.

“Uphaar” (1971) was a small budget movie. It had newcomers Jaya Bhaduri and Swaroop Dutt in lead roles in this movie. This movie came in an era when Rajesh Khanna ruled the roost and others were left to fight for the crumbs.

This movie, which was directed by Sudhendu Roy did a decent business and recovered its expenditure.

The songs of this movie were nice, but once again, these songs had come at the “wrong” time. In an era when Kishore Kumar was all the rage, this movie had songs sung by Rafi.

Here is a song from this movie. This song is sung by Rafi and it is song is picturised on Swaroop Dutt and Jaya Bhaduri. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Listening to it dispassionaltely and with an open mind, it is a lovely song to listen to.

Here is this wonderful song from “Uphaar” (1971). Its lyrics are provided by Prakashchandra.

Song-Main ik raja hoon tu ik rani hai (Uphaar) (1971) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics (Provided by Prakashchandra)

Main ik raja hoon, tu ik raani hai
main ik raja hoon, tu ik raani hai
main ik raja hoon, tu ik raani hai
Prem nagar ki
ye ik sundar prem kahaani hai
main ik raja hoon
o o o
ho o

kyaa hoti hai prem kahaani
ye bhi tu naadaan na jaani
kya hoti hai prem kahaani
ye bhi tu naadaan na jaani
kitni pyaari pyaari teri
ye naadaani hai
main ik raja hoon, tu ik raani hai
main ek raja hoon

man mera ik mahal ho jaise
tu is mein rehti hai aise
man mera ik mahal ho jaise
tu is mein rehti hai aise
jaise seep mein moti hai
saagar mein paani hai
main ik raja hoon, tu ik raani hai
main ek raja hoon

premee bhanwren rangraliyon ke
kyaa kehte hain in kaliyon se
premee bhawren rangraliyon ke
kyaa kehte hain in kaliyon se
ye tujhko kaise samjhaaoon
tu deewani hai
main ek raja hoon, tu ek raani hai
Prem nagar ki
ye ik sundar prem kahaani hai
main ik raja hoon

Atulji,
What you have written is absolutely right. When Kishore Kumar’s Sun was high, this song by Rafi was a surprise. History repeated when R.D.Burman selected Rafi to sing “Kya huwa tera waada” for the movie, “Hum Kisise Kum Nahin” and Rafi Sahab won the National Award for this song. Main ik raja hoon is a beautiful song with lots of love/affection in it.
Thanks Prakashji.

Khyati ji,

This is not R. D. Burman song, but Laxmikant Pyarelal. As for Laxmikant Pyarelal, even during the Kishore wave, they had Rafi singing for all hereos including Rajesh Khanna, in films like “Do Raaste”, ‘Sachha Jhoota’, Aan milo Sajna , and an all Rafi score of “Mehboob ki mehendi”. L-P ended the Rafi era with musical block buster of “Sargam”. It had many songs with only two playback singer, i.e. Rafi & Lata.

As for R. D. Burman, his first major hit film, is ‘Teesri Manzil’ again with all male songs by Rafi sahab.

Nahmji,
I am Rafi’s fan. Mere kaheneka matlab yeh tha ki jab bhi Rafi ko opportunity mili, usne saabit kar diya ke uski udaan ko koi rok bhi nahin sakta ya chhoo bhi nahin sakta. I happy that you were concerned. Har ek prashanshak ke dil me koi ek kalaakar jagah bana leta hai jo doosra koi nahin le saktaa. (uska yeh matalab bhi nahin hai ki doosre sab achhe nahin hai. Har kalaakar apni jagah pe ooncha hai) Rafi sahab ne hamare dil me wohi jagah bana li hai. I enjoy each and every singer, but for Rafi sahab, no words to describe.

Khyati ji
main ne aap ka matlab sahi samjha thha, sirf kuch misconceptions, hain 70’s ko lekar, unke baare mein main apna nazariya pesh karne ki koshish kar rahi thhi. Ummeed hai aap ne bura nahin maana hoga. Aur aap yeh baat bhi bilkul bajaa hai, ke kisi ek kalakaar ko pasand karne ka matlab yeh nahin hai ki doosre sab achhe nahin hai. 🙂

Somethings sound too straightforward in English, i.e. the reason for this misunderstanding. I had to write this comment above your comment, because there was no option for ‘reply’.

corrections:
Sachha jhoota:music by Kalyanji anandji

and Mehboob ki mehandi did have a KISHORE melody:”Mere deewanepan ki bhi koi dawaa nahin”

Right. I stand corrected on both counts. Let me add Kalyanji Anandji also to the list of such MD’s which included S. D. Burman, Madan Mohan, Ravi and more, who had Rafi had singing for all heroes including Rajesh Khanna, during the 70’s. 😀
