Wo to baans Bareilly se aayaa

When I was growing up as a kid, I loved listening to songs that had names of places in them. To my mind, if the name of a place figured in a song, then that song had “arrived”. The name of Bombay figured in several songs naturally and I envied the people living in that Metropolital city.
Not just Bombay and Delhi, some small towns had also figured in Hindi songs. In 1960s, Bareilly was immortalised by the song Jhumka gira re Bareli ke bazaar me(Mera Saaya). Likewise Bikaner became famous thanks to the song Mera naam hai Chameli..chali aayi main akeli Bikaner se(Raja Aur Rank)(1968).
I was very envious of Bareilly and Bikaner and wondered when my town (Ranchi) will figure in a Hindi movie song. To this date, there has been no Hindi movie song mentioning that place. Luckily, the place has now become well known thanks to cricket Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was of course not even born when I was growing up contemplating hen my town was going to become famous.
It turns out that the “Mera Saayaa” (1964) song was not the first time Bareilly had figured in a Hindi movie song. The name of Bareilly figures in a well known Hindi saying to which goes- “Ulte Baans Bareli ko” which is Hindi equivalent of the English saying “exporting coal to Lancashire”. The older Hindi movie song in fact used this Hindi saying to create a song in 1950.
This song is from “Dahej” (1950). It is sung by Jayshree, the heroine of the movie. Shams Lucknowi is the lyricist and music is composed by Vasant Desai.
And what a fun song it is. This song was not available on youtube so far and I have uploaded this song just now.
