“Rail Ka Dibba” (1953) is one of the earliest movie of Shammi Kapoor. In this movie he is paired opposite Madhubala. By that time, Madhubala had already carved a niche for herself whereas Shammi Kapoor had yet to discover his niche.
Those days no one bothered much about songs picturised on Shammi Kapoor. However, songs picturised on Madhubala were a different matter altogether.
Here is a song from ‘Rail Ka Dibba” (1953) which is picturised on Madhubala and Shammi Kapoor. The song is dominated by Madhubala and it is sho who gets to sing this song in Shamshad Begam’s voice. as for Shammi Kapoor, he literally plays the second fiddle in this song. Yes, he is seen fiddling a fiddle in this song, apeing the mannerisms of Raj Kapoor including wearing the dreamly far away looks on his face. This song had the potential to become the proverbial running around the trees song that we so read about, but the song falls short of that ideals because it is only Madhubala who does the running around. Shammi Kapoor , as mentioned about, hangs around doing little of note in this song, even though Madhubala keeps telling him “chanda se gawaahi le le tu mera saajan” (Moon will testify that you are my beloved).
Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ghulam Mohammad.
It is a forgotten gem that I discovered just a few hours ago.
