Films with sound came into being in 1931. Saigal Saab started his film career in 1932. From the earlier years, there are a lot of gaps in information regarding the films and the songs contained therein. From the first 5 years of his career, the information about the songs sung by him in the movies is not complete. There are at least 6 to 8 movies in which Saigal Saab has acted, but information as well as recordings of the songs sung by him, is missing.
Taken in chronological order, Pujaarin (1936) is the 15th Hindi film that Saigal Saab acted in. Directed by Prafulla Ray, the acting credits for this movie include KL Saigal, Chandra, Pahadi Sanyal, KC Dey, Rajkumari, Nawab Babulal, Kailash, Jagdeesh, Kedar, Sham Laha. Saigal plays the role of Jeeband Chowdhuri, a young man whose occupation is to grab the assets of other people. He marries the daughter of a rich family, only for the purpose of getting a lot money as dowry. The information about the lyricist for this song is missing. The music is composed by Timir Baran.
Even for this movie, there are only two songs (out of a total of 11) which are definitely attributed to Saigal Saab, and whose recordings are available. This sing is a quintessential drunkard’s song. The rendering is not bound by any meter or rhythm. It is done so naturally, presented as a combination of singing and talking modes – a realistic presentation of a drunkard. A rare recording indeed.
