President (1937) is a social drama from New Theatres, Calcutta, produced by BN Sircar and directed by Nitin Bose. The story line is about the relationship between mill owners and workers. In a manner of speaking, this movie is probably the forerunner of other such movies that were made later on, e.g. Paighaam, Akaashdeep, Baharon Ke Sapne.
Prabhavati (Kamlesh Kumari) is the president of the Prabhavati Cotton Mills Ltd. that was established by her father. She is a successful manager and businesswoman, and has been able to continuously grow the company business. Prakash (played by KL Saigal) is a young worker in the mill. He once suggests some changes in the use of certain machine, to reduce the risk factor to the workers. His suggestions are turned down; a certain animosity creeps in between the two, and Prakash is terminated from his job at the mill. As the course of events progress, Prakash meets Shiela (played by Lila Desai) and the two get romantically involved. It turns out that Sheila is the younger sister of Prabhavati, the mill owner. Predictable conflicts appear in the story, before it comes to a happy ending.
The music composition for this movie is by RC Boral. Confirmed information about the name of lyricist is not available. The movie has seven songs in all. Saigal Saab has rendered four of these, including the iconic songs ‘Ek Bangla Baney Nyaaraa’ and ‘Ek Raja Ka Beta Lekar Udne Waalaa Ghoda’. Both these are already posted on this blog. Also posted is another song by Saigal Saab, ‘Naa Koi Prem Ka Rog Lagaaye’. This is the fourth song by Saigal Saab for this movie.
