“Tansen” (1943) is a movie in which K L Saigal had played the title role and he had sung some outstanding songs. all those songs have already been discussed in this blog.
In this movie Khursheed Begam, also known as Khursheed Bano, or just Khursheed (she was the main Khursheed of those days) played Tani, the love interest of Tansen. Like K l Saigal, she sang her own songs, and in the opoinion of many, she stole a march over Saigal in her singing. She had also acted opposite Saigal in “Bhakt Surdas” (1942) and there too she had held her own (or bettered Saigal, in the opinion of many) where Saigal had once again played the title role.
Indeed, listening to the voice of Khursheed is a pleasure. Here is a song sung by her in “Tansen” (1943). Tansen, who was an ordinary man known to him, has joined emperor Akbar’s court and he has become an important man, and he has not bothered to find out about Tani. In this song, Tani comes to the capital, searching for Tansen while singing this song. The lyrics of the song make her feelings and here thoughts clear for all to hear. Tansen has forgotten his humble roots after joining the royal court. Earlier, he used to come to her locality everyday professiing his love for her, but now he has forgotten all about her.
Towards the end of the song, she gets a glimpse of Tansen, and that is when the song comes to an end.
