Hamko samajh na leejiye daali ghulaab ki

Posted on: September 8, 2011

Among all the genres of songs that one can have in Hindi movies, rail songs are a genre that is quite fascinating. The rail songs are in fact a very interesting topic and I had done a long and deailed discussion on rail songs where I had discussed some 30 odd songs in my by now almost defunct blog.

These rail songs could be inspirational, romantic, fun, melancholic, nostalgic etc. There is an interesting kind of rail song in which two lead actors of opposite genders find themselves together in the same coach and same compartment. And the entire coach appears to be empty apart from the two of them.

Young men travelling on train always fantasise about the situation when they end up alone with a pretty young lady. This fantasy rarely fructifies in real life, though. In most trains, the coaches (especially the lower class coaches) are overcrowded. There is waiting list even in upper class coaches, and the chances of ending up alone with a lady in a compartment in today possible only in the most expensive class (AC first class) where there are separate compartments. The chances of young men and women travelling in this class and finding themselves together is remote unless they are already in a high paying job or they have rich parents.

In olden days , there used to be a class of coaches called first class, and they also had separate compartments like present day AC first class, though there was no air conditioning those days. And in the picturisation of this song Ashok Kumar and Raagini find themselves in a compartment of one such first class coach. In India, such a situation when two strangers of the opposite gender find themselves together is a situation that can set tongues wagging. Women need to be wary of such a situation . Raagini decides that attack is the best form of defence. So she jumps down from her upper berth and warns her co passenger not to entertain any evil thoughts as she was well capable of taking care of themselves. She does not say all this in prose, rather she expresses all this in the form of a song and dance as befits a Hindi movie actor. 🙂

The bemused Ashok Kumar looks on while Raagini dances in the compartment. It must be said that dancing in the narrow space in a first class coach is not easy, and Raagini gets full marks from me on this count. 🙂

Whether this song and dance was actually needed to ward off the evil designs of Ashok Kumar is a different matter altogether. It must be said in Ashok Kumar’s favour though that he is no Prem Chopra or Ranjeet. 🙂 But then Raagini and the movie makers are not supposed to know this.

Curious minds may ask the reason why the two of them needed to be in that train in the first place. As it was, Raagini was going to attend an interview for a dance instuctor and she certainly manages to keep her in practice by making use of her dancing prowess.

When she goes to the interview and faces the interview board, who does she find as the head of the unterview board ? It is none other than the same Ashok Kumar ! Raagini’s heart sinks. Noew my chances of langing this job is gone, she thinks.

But in the end, she finds, much to her relief, and Asho Kumar does not hold any grudges against her and she gets the job.

Indeed, one should not allow one’s rejudices to affect one’s judgement in professional matters. She was good in her job (as he had already seen) and that is what mattered as far as he was concerned. Bravo ! My respect for Ashok Kumar goes up some more.

Here is this lovely song from “Kalpana” (1960). I was not aware of this song till a few hours ago, but I was reminded by Raja that he had given farmaishes for the songs of this movie. So I looked up the songs of this movie and discovered this song.

This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar. I have included the video as well as audio links of this song.

Here is wishing a very happy birthday to Asha Bhonsle on her birthday (8th September). Her contribution in the field of Hindi movie music is immense and this rare and special song is one of our virtual bouquet to her from us.

Lyrics

Hamko samajh na leejiye daali ghulaab ki
kar denge ham to saaf tabeeyat janaab ki
hamko samajh na leejiye daali ghulaab ki
kar denge ham to saaf tabeeyat janaab ki

nazron ke teer aankhon mein
rakhhiye sambhaal ke
nazron ke teer aankhon mein
rakhhiye sambhaal ke
nazron ke teer aankhon mein
rakhhiye sambhaal ke
pachhtaaoge
pachhtaaoge
nazar kisi lagke pe daal ke
pachhtaaoge
nazar kisi lagke pe daal ke
mehfil nahin hai ye kisi bigde nawaab ki
kar denge ham to saaf tabeeyat janaab ki
hamko samajh na leejiye daali ghulaab ki
kar denge ham to saaf tabeeyat janaab ki

jo aapki samajh mein na aaye
wo raag hoon
jo aapki samajh mein na aaye
wo raag hoon
bijli hoon naachti hoon
ik shola hoon aag hoon
bijli hoon naachti hoon
ik shola hoon aag hoon
hamse ulajh ke apni hi matti karaab ki
kar denge ham to saaf tabeeyat janaab ki
hamko samajh na leejiye daali ghulaab ki
kar denge ham to saaf tabeeyat janaab ki

Yaay! A song from Kalpana! I must say I didn’t find the movie very good (especially the second half) but I did like most of the songs. Thanks so much, Atul, for posting this.

And a very happy birthday to Ashaji. She is one of my favorite singers – I never get bored listening to her voice. She has such a range and variety, it’s amazing. Even Lata has admitted this.

Even today, when Asha sings, I feel her voice sounds like it used to sound years ago – still there is that charm. And when you listen to her interviews, you feel that, in her mind, she is still so young at heart.

May she have a long life!
