This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
‘Ek Sapera Ek Lutera’ (1965) is a musical bonanza from the pen of Asad Bhopali and the baton of Usha Khanna. The film itself is a B grade production, and did just OK on the box office. Produced under the banner of Dimple Films, Bombay and directed by Naresh Kumar. The star cast is a typical B grade lineup for those times, featuring Feroze Khan, Kumkum, Uma Dutt, Mumtaz Begum, Shyam Kumar, Indira Bansal, Tuntun, Ramavtar, Rashid Khan, Daljeet, Sheikh, Sunder, Gopal Ralhan, Rani, Madhu Apte, Krishna, Khairaati etc. The film is a costume action cum romance drama, that is based on the life style and culture of snake charmers and gypsies.
The film has seven songs, four of which are already posted here. Here is a fifth offering from this film, and what a wonderful gem of a song by Suman Kalyanpur. The setting for this song is royal, and the song is performed on the screen by Kum Kum. She is singing a song of a ‘saaqi’, a song of drinking and getting lost in the stupor of love. The recipient of her longings and emotions is Feroze Khan, who already appears to be somewhat drunk, and not in the need of any more to be poured down. Kum Kum is playing the enchantress, softly and lovingly persuading Feroze to drink some more.
There is another actor in the frame, who seems to be a companion of Feroze Khan. He is not drinking, but is happily observing the ongoing efforts of the duo busy in the process of getting more drunk. Apparently, this person is in disguise, considering his hair and moustache. I request knowledgeable readers to help identify this actor.
Enjoy another wonderful piece of music from Asad Bhopali and Usha Khanna.
utthaao jaam chalo, dono saath saath piyen
tamaam raat piyen, tamaam raat piyen
O my lover, pick up your goblet, lets both drink together to this night
We shall drink all night, we shall drink till this night is
koi khayaal koi fiqr, koi gham na karo
tum apni shokh jawaani se, yun sitam na karo
berukhi chhod bhi do, taubaa ko tod bhi do
Cast away all thoughts, all worries, all sorrows on this night
Be kind to your handsome youth, do treat it with disdain and callousness
abhi to raat ke chehre pe noor aayaa hai
abhi to aankhon mein halkaa suroor aayaa hai
itne madhosh na ho itney khaamosh na ho
The night is still in infancy, and the glimmer of darkness is just setting in
The wine and its stupor is still to take hold, the color of intoxication is just beginning to show in the eyes
Don’t be so silent already, don’t be so drunk already
idhar sharaab udhar madd-bhari nazar ka nashaa
milen jo donon to ho jaaye umra bhar kaa nashaa
daur par daur chaley haan zaraa aur chaley
The wine has its own flavor, and then there is the intoxication from your eyes
Getting them together – and I would happily be drunk for the rest of my life
Let there be another round (of drinking), and yet another. . .
