Ek Raat (1967) is a B/C grade film produced under the banner of East and West Movietone, Bombay, and is directed by Rajnath. The music for this film is composed by Usha Khanna. The lyrics for this film are written by three poets viz., Anjaan, Yogesh, and Jalaal Malihabaadi. The star cast is made up of Sheikh Mukhtar, Ravi Kumar, Simi, Shyama, Madan Puri, David, Helen, Lakshmichhaaya, Samson, Haroon, Bhagwan Sinha, Nazir Kashmiri, CL Shah, Bihari, Vasanti. This film was the debut vehicle for actor Ravi Kumar. The name does not sound familiar from other films, and I would request our knowledgeable readers to add more information about this actor.
This song is written by Yogesh and the singing voice is that of Asha Bhosle. On screen, this is a dance number performed by Helen. Those were the years when a dance item by Helen used to be part of the formula for making movies, especially a film that has some mystery and intrigue built into the story. I am sure there are large number of Helen’s dance songs that still need to be discovered and posted on this blog.
Other actors who appear in this video clip are Ravi Kumar, the young man who is watching the performance from the side lines. And then there is Shyama and David who have a mysterious and silent conversation through gestures. David is in an overcoat and a felt hat, trying hard to look like a gangster or a detective, but not succeeding very well. As soon as one sees David on the screen, an image of a jolly plump old man comes to mind, and his machinations in a felt hat and overcoat just don’t seem to cut it.
Anyway, a dance song by Helen is always a delight. With music by Usha Khanna, and Helen performing it, it has to be good foot tapping experience. Enjoy.
mere gesu’on se chhann kar, bikhraa jo husn mera
kahin ho gayaa ujaalaa, kahin chhaa gayaa andheraa
Filtering through the strands of my tresses, as my loveliness spreads out
There is a play of illumination and shadows that pervades the ambience
sadiyon ke raaz aa kar, hotthon pe thham gaye hain
jazbaat ajnabee thhe, dil mein seham gaye hain
kuchh aisi uljhanon ne, dil ko hai gheraa
Riddles from many ages are waiting eagerly on my lips
Strange emotions, timid and anxious, are gathered in my heart
My heart is enveloped with the dilemmas, of what to express, what to hold back
hai ye intezaar kis kaa, hai ye kaisi beqaraari
aankhon mein aaj shaayad guzregi raat saari
lootaa qaraar jis ne wo kaun hai luteraa
An apprehensive wait, an anxiety, I do not know for whom
Maybe this night with pass without sleep coming to the eyes
Eyes that search for the bandit who has stolen the peace from my heart
