Aahen na bhar thandi thandi

What is the most popular drink in India ? Tea, or ‘Chai”, as they call it in Hindi and many other Indian and foreign languages. If you visit and Indian household or office, you are likely to be served “chai”. When you go to a railway station, then the most ubiquitous vwndor you may come across is the itinerant teaseller one who sells his goods while carring a kettle of tea and shouting “Chai, garam chai” in his characteristic manner which has remnained unchanged over several generations.
The tea that is normally drunk in India is prepared differently from the tea that is drunk elsewhere, say in China. Indian tea preparation included milk and sugar, whereas tea elsewhere does not. Of late, I have realised that drinking so much tea a day in India containing sugar may not be all that good. Personally I am coming round to the view that lemon tea is perhaps tastier and more healthy.
There indeed people who are quite addicted to tea and they drink team after every hour or so.
It is quite surprising that Chai, which is such an integral part of Indian life does not have songs devoted to it. To the best of my knowledge, the only “chai” song in Hindi movie is this song from “Banphool” (1971) which is the subject of this present discussion.
In this song, Babita plays a chai seller and she sings tea while singing this song. It is quite a lively and hummable song which is sung by Lata. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

aahen na bhar thandi thandi
aahen na bhar thandi thandi
khatre ki hai ye jhandi
thandi
garam garam chaay peeley
zara meri chaay peeley
peele meri chaay peeley
aahen na bhar thandi thandi
ho Ramu
o Shyaamu
o Lachchu
o Bachchu
naram naram haathon se
aa haa
garam garam chaay peeley
zara meri chaay peeley
peele meri chaay peeley
aahen na bhar thandi thandi
aa ha haa haa
haa haa haa haa
aa ha haa haa haa
aise mausam mein jo paise bachaayegaa
sardi ke maare bedardi akad jaayegaa
aise mausam mein jo paise bachaayegaa
sardi ke maare bedardi akad jaayegaa
jaan hai to jahaan hai
raam kasam
garam garam chaay peelye
zara meri chaay peeley
peeley
meri chaay peeley
aahen na bhar thandi thandi
ye gulaabi ki gulaabi
chaay ki pyaali
wo paas aaye na
jiski jeb khaali
ye gulaabi ki gulaabi
chaay ki pyaali
wo paas aaye na
jiski jeb khaali
aaj nagad udhaar kal
baat khatam
garam garam chaay peeley
zara meri chaay peeley
pee le eri chaay peeley
aahen na bhar thandi thandi
nadaan hain jo
peete hain kadwaa paani
ye meethi chaay sab nashon ki hai raani
nadaan hain jo
peete hain kadwaa paani
ye meethi chaay sab nashon ki hai raani
peeke dekh sharaab se
kyaa hai ye kam
garam garam chaay peeley
zara meri chaay peeley
peeley
meri chaay peeley
aahen na bhar thandi thandi
khatre ki hai ye jhandi
thandi
garam garam chaay peeley
zara meri chaay peeley
peeley
meri chaay peeley
hmm hmm hmm hmm
