Aa jaane wafaa aa

Posted on: November 23, 2011

“Anarkali” (1953) is a musical blockbuster which has great songs following one after another. The music of this movie is composed by C Ramchandra.

Legend has it that the producer approached C Ramchandra to compose the music of this movie on the condition that all songs to be picturised on Bina Rai were to be sung by Geeta Roy (Later Dutt). But C Ramchandra insisted on using Lata’s voice. Then the producer signed up Basant Prakash as the music director. Basant Prakash composed one song which was recorded in the voice of Geeta Dutt. then he was unable to continue as he fell ill. The Producer then had to go back to C Ramchandra, who recorded all female playback songs in Lata’s voice. But the one Geet Dutt song that was already recorded was allowed to remain in the movie and it was picturised on Bina Ray.

This rare and special song means a lot to Mr Sadanand Kamath a lot and he sent me the lyrics of this song at least one month in advance to be used on the occasion of Geeta Dutt’s birthday which falls on 23rd november. So here is this wonderful song from “Anarkali” (1953), which is created by an entirely different musical team than the other songs of this movie. This song is sung by Geeta Dutt, written by Jaan Nisaar Akhtar and music is composed by Basant Prakash.

Lyrics(Provided by Sadanand Kamath)

o o o o
o o o
o o o
o o o o o

wafaa ki laaj reh jaayegi
aajaa tere aane se
mohabbat ki nazar neechi naa ho jaaye zamaane se
aa jaan-e-wafaa aa
aa jaan-e-wafaa aa

kehte hain kise pyaar zamaane ko dikhaa de
duniyaa ki nazar ishq ke qadmon pe jhukaa de
qadmon pe jhukaa de
aa jaan-e-wafaa aa
aa jaan-e-wafaa aa

aajaa ye meraa naaz uthaanaa hi padegaa
aajaa ye meraa naaz uthaanaa hi padegaa
jab pyaar kiyaa hai to nibhaanaa hi padegaa
jab pyaar kiyaa hai to nibhaanaa hi padegaa
aa dil ke liye jaan ki baazi bhi lagaa de
aa dil ke liye jaan ki baazi bhi lagaa de
ae ae ae
duniyaa ki nazar ishq ke qadmon pe jhukaa de
qadmon pe jhukaa de
aa jaan-e-wafaa aa
aa jaan-e-wafaa aa

aa pyaar ke toofaan mein lehraa ke chalaa aa
aa pyaar ke tufaan mein lehraa ke chalaa aa
har qaid ko har rasm ko thukraa ke chalaa aa
har qaid ko har rasm ko thukraa ke chalaa aa
aashiq hai to har cheez mohabbat pe lutaa de
aashiq hai to har cheez mohabbat pe lutaa de
duniyaa ki nazar ishq ke qadmo pe jhukaa de
qadmo pe jhukaa de
aa jaan-e-wafaa aa
aa jaan-e-waffa aa

deewaanaa mohabbat kaa kahin dar ke rukaa hai
darbaar mein shaahon ke kahin ishq jhukaa hai
khud ishq ke darbaar mein shaahon ko jhukaa de
aa jaan-e-wafaa aa
shaahon ko jhukaa de
shaahon ko jhukaa de
aa jaan-e-wafaa aa

actually i prefer Bina Rai’s “Anarkali” to Madhubala’s ‘Anarakli” interpretation. i had seen both the movies on DOORDARSHAN a long time back. and always felt Pradeep Kumar was lousy as “Salim”. and then i saw “Mughal-e-Azam” and for the only time in my long addiction of Hindi movies i thought Dilip Kumar was also lousy.
but kya karen i sat through both the movies everytime only for the sake of the heroines and their smile

May be they were both just trying to stay true to the character they were portraying. May be it was a case of true love in case of Anarkali, while it was just infatuation for Salim. He did wage a war but may be the base of that was ego and not love.

I saw this movie once upon a time, and so I didn’t know this song was from this movie. I guess the other songs sung by Lata became more popular, but I have always liked this song. It has such a light and lovely feel to it. All I remember of this movie is Pradeep kumar’s wooden face and the lovely songs.

When you consider the fact that this Album has so many gems, and then you listen to this song, you feel like, in terms of singing, Geeta ji ka ek song hi kaafi hai, to balance all the other great numbers sung by Lata ji. Thankfully, the producers retained this great song.
