hamaare baad ab mehefil mein afsaane bayaan honge
bahaaren humko dhoondegi na jaane hum kahaan honge

These two lines of a song from film BAAGHI (1953) sum up the realities of our life. This song penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and coming out of the magical combination of Lata-Madan Mohan was long overdue to be discussed in this blog. One song from this film has been discussed more than a year back.

The film was directed by Anant Thakur. Ranjan and Naseem Bano were the lead actors in this film. The other cast included Pran, Anwar Hussein, Shammi, Mukri and B M Vyas.

Despite churning out melodious songs since early 50s, Madan Mohan could not get success to the extent he deserved during his life time. To a larger extent, his association with films which flopped miserably, may have contributed to the public apathy towards his songs. It was only after his death in July 1975 that Madan Mohan was ‘discovered’ by all those concerned with film industry and music companies. It is an irony that his compositions used in film VEER ZAARA (2004) nearly 30 years after his death became very popular and he was not there to enjoy the success. In a way, the first two lines of this song is a reflection on Madan Mohan’s life who got eulogy from film fraternity when he was no more.

Only the audio clip is available for this song but looking at the cast, I guess, the song may have been picturised on Naseem Bano.

This song is a rendition of a high class poetry of Majrooh Sultanpuri which will surely touch the heart of the listeners.

Song-Hamaare baad ab mehfil mein afsaane bayaan honge (Baaghi)(1953) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

hamaare baad ab mehefil mein afsaane bayaan honge
bahaaren humko dhoondengi
na jaane hum kahaan honge
bahaaren humko dhoondegi

isi andaaz se jhoomegaa mausam
gaayegi duniyaa
isi andaaz se jhoomegaa mausam
gaayegi duniyaa
mohabbat phir haseen hogi
nazaare phir jawaan honge
bahaaren humko dhoondegi
na jaane hum kahaan honge
bahaaren humko dhoondegi

na hum honge na tum hoge
na dil hogaa magar phir bhi
na hum honge na tum hoge
na dil hogaa magar phir bhi
hazaaron manzilen hongi
hazaaron kaarvaan honge
bahaaren humko dhoondegi
na jaane hum kahaan honge
bahaaren humko dhoondegi

Sadanandji,
What a magical voice! Truly a gem. When I heard the news about Yash Chopra using MM’s treasury of “unreleased” tunes with the permission of his son and former CEO of Yash Raj Films, Mr. Sanjeev Kohli, I had the same feeling like you. After listening to the extra CD (provided with Veer Zara CD) in which all tunes are in his own voice, you do feel his TOUCH was missing from all the VZ songs. I don’t have the history of MM’s films but want to know in how many of their films, Chopra Brothers have used MM as a music director. Arunji will be the right person to clear my doubt.

There are two beautiful faces in this video- Madhubala and Nutan. Just FYI.

To the best of my knowledge, Chopras did not use Madan Mohan as music director during his time. Their regular music director at that time used to be Ravi.

Thanks Atulji for clearing my doubts. So in that case, I would say that MM’s “unused” compositions were “used” with his name to promote the movie. Well, that’s what we call “Filmy Duniya”.

I would rather rate the song as Extra Excellent.
