Kehti hai ye thandi hawaa

What happens when an actress known to us for playing tragedy roles is paired up with an actor known to us for playing comedy roles ? Much to our delight, the result is a light hearted movie most of the time.
Kishore Kumar and Meena Kumari have acted together in several movies in 1950s and almost all of them are delightful movies to watch. Names of movies like “Tamaasha” (1952), “Memsaahib” (1957) and “Miss Mary” (1957) readily come to mind. Kishore Kumar also paired up with Nutan (another formidable tragedy queen) and the resultant movies were also delightful light hearted comedies.
I am not sure if “Ilzaam” (1954) too was a light hearted movie, but I can assume that the movie may not have been too much taxing on the nerves of the the movie goers, though the title of the movie (meaning “Accusation”) suggests otherwise.
This movie was a Talwar Films Production and it was directed by R C Talwar. Apart from Kishore Kumar and Meena Kumari, this movie also had Jagdish Sethi,Shammi, Amar, Randhir, Meera Devi etc in it.
I have discussed one song from this movie in the past. Here is another song from the movie. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Meena Kumari and Kishore Kumar. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist and music is composed by Madan Mohan.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

Lyrics
kehti hai yeh thandi hawa aa
kehti hai yeh thandi hawa
yeh rut yeh sama aise na ganwa aa
kehti hai yeh thandi hawa
hmmmm hmmmm hmmmm
mausam ke labon par ek raag hai
lehron mein sulagti ek aag hai
mausam ke labon par ek raag hai
lehron mein sulagti ek aag hai
aise mein kahan hai tu saaz utha
kehti hai yeh thandi hawa
yeh rut yeh sama aise na ganwa
kehti hai yeh thandi hawa
hmmmm hmmmm hmmmm
naiya ki tarah hai yeh zindagi
jaayegi kahaan mat soch kabhi
manzil se tujhe kya yeh gham na laga
kehti hai yeh thandi hawa
yeh rut yeh sama aise na ganwa
kehti hai yeh thandi hawa
aa aa aa aa

Atu ji,
Actually,Kishore kumar was like a catalyst who used to make the film enjoyable, whatever the story or whoever the actor. As rightly said,Meena kumari or Nutan became not only enjoyable but even must have enjoyed themselves personally in the presence of KK in their films.Another habitual ‘tear jerker’ Nimmi too was enjoyable in ‘Daal mein Kaala’ with Kishore kumar in the film.
ILZAM-1954 was not a comedy film as such but was a sort of combination of comedy, tragedy,Drama etc.The end result was,it was neither this nor that fully and failed to impress the audience. However, there were some comedy situations which were quite enjoyable.
This was a story of Kamli(Meena kumari),a poor beautiful boat girl, who inspires Rajan(Kishore kumar),the pampered son of a rich family.Rajan’s mother is a hysterical whimsical lady.
Lakhoo, the village vagabond is after kamli.Once Rajan saves Kamli from his advances. They fall in love, much to the chagrin of Lakhu who instigates Rajan’s mother. All her anger falls on Rekha,Rajan’s sister, who is pregnant. There is an argument and Rekha leaves house to go to her husband. She meets with accident and before dying, gives her newborn baby to her best friend Kamli with a condition not to tell anybody till her husband comes for the baby. After her death,Kamli is unable to answer to any query about the baby and is branded as a girl of loose character.Even Rajaqn misunderstands her.
Finally, when baby’s father arrives and explains everything, things are cleared and the ILZAM on Kamli is finally washed off.All is well in the end and Rajan accepts Kamli happily.

Meena Kumari sparkled in ‘Miss Mary’, a remake of ‘Missiamma’ in Tamil. It’s a delightful comedy even when seen today. However, Meena Kumari was paired with Gemini Ganesan and Kishore Kumar with Jamuna.
