Sambhal ae dil

Posted on: February 6, 2012

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusist of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

As a music director, N Dutta worked for films that are a mix of A grade and B/C grade films. He did have some films associated with big name banners. Especially, he worked for BR Films for the movies Saadhna (1958), Dhool Ka Phool (1959) and Dharamputra (1961). Each of these films is a musical bonanza and boasts of a string of wonderful hits. Four songs of the 1958 film ‘Saadhna’ are already posted on this blog. This is the 5th gem from this film.

‘Saadhna’ is a social drama produced and directed by BR Chopra. 1950s was the decade of rebuilding of this nation. The film industry was also very active in this arena, and a large number of films were made in this decade, espousing a new awareness and a new commitment to regenerate the industry and the economy of this country. Besides, a social and cultural renewal was also in the air, and many filmmakers tried to tackle social issues that were considered taboo. BR Chopra is one filmmaker whose films always deal with social issues and topics in a sensitive and a mature way. By the strength of his banner, he would bring respectability and attention to such issues, as also capture the attention of the public, since his films always had mainstream star cast. Mohan (Sunil Dutt) is a college professor. He lives with his ailing mother (Leela Chitnis) who would like him to get married soon. As her health starts to decline, he takes into confidence his neighbor Jeevan Ram (Radhakishan) and requests him to find a lady would pose as his wife for some time, for a fee. Jeevan Ram introduces Mohan to Rajni (Vijayantimala). Mohan presents Rajni to his mother as his future wife. Rajni starts visiting Mohan’s home every day. His mother’s health improves. She is so enamored by Rajni that she even hands over the family jewels to her, to prepare for the expected upcoming wedding. Even Mohan finds himself falling in love with her. Fate intervenes and the truth about Rajni is revealed – that she is a dancing girl, and her real name is Champabai. The news shatters Mohan, but then surprisingly, his mother supports Rajni, and asks Mohan to somehow convince her to come back. The rest of the film is how Mohan through phases of reconciliation and acceptance, ending the film with a happy union of the family.

This song is a duet sung by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle. It is picturized on Sunil Dutt and Vijayantimala, singing the song together, although they are remote from each other. It is the phase of the film when Mohan wants her back in his life, and Rajni has strong reservations for continuing the relationship. The song is a wonderfully soft expression of desires by one, and the holding back by the other. The reasons expressed from both sides are emphatic – for Mohan, the emphasis is on the matters of the heart, for Rajni it is the dilemma of the social taboos linked to herself. The words are very expressive, and it has to be. It is Sahir Ludhianvi in the best of his mettle. Enjoy this lovely conversation duet.

sambhal ae dil, tadapne aur tadapaane se kya hoga
jahaan basana nahi mumkin vahaan jaane se kya hoga

Be steady, o heart of mine
For nothing is to be gained
From this torment and heartache
The place that cannot be an abode
What use is to visit such a place

chale aao, ke ab munh pher ke jaane se kya hoga
jo tum par mit chuka us dil ko tarasaane se kya hoga

(O love of mine)
Come to me
Do not turn and go away
Do not torment the heart
That is already given over to you

hamein sansaar mein apna banaana kaun chaahega
ye masley phool se joban sajaana kaun chaahega
tamannaaon ko jhoothe khwaab dikhalaane se kya hoga

Who in this wide world
Would accept me as a companion
Who would like to adorn their youth
With withered flowers
It’s not use building false dreaming
Of desires (that can’t be fulfilled)

tumhen dekha tumhen chaaha tumhen pooja hai is dil ne
jo sach poochho to pehli baar kuchh maanga hai is dil ne
samajhte boojhte anajaan ban jaane se kya hoga

Seeing you, loving you, worshiping you
This heart is asking for something
First time in this life
Pray do not turn your back
On what your know and realize
(About my love for you)

jinhen milti hain kushiyaan vo muqaddar aur hotey hain
jo dil mein ghar banaate hain vo dilbar aur hotey hain
ummeedon ko khilaune de ke behalaane se kya hoga

The joy and fortunes (of love)
Belong to destinies of others
Those who come to reside in a heart
Are other lovers (not us)
What’s the use
Of needless pampering of hopes

bahut din se thi dil mein ab zubaan tak baat pahunchi hai
waheen tak is ko rehne do jahaan tak baat pahunchi hai

The words from my heart
Have come to my lips, in a long time
Hush, lets leave the things
As they are
(Not take them any further)

jo dil ki aakhri hadd hai wahaan tak baat pahunchi hai
jisey khonaa yakeeni hai usey paane se kya hoga

My feelings
Are at the farthest edges of my heart
Alas but what use it is
To attain that which certainly will be lost

My favourite from this movie is “Aurat ne janam diya mardon ko…..” sung so beautifully by Lata

The lyrics are so meaningful here and Asha’s voice adds so much poignancy to the song – one can actually feel the pain and sense the longing at the same time – this song is so beautiful! All the songs in this movie were outstanding, and as Mr. Menon has pointed out, the song Aurat ne janam diya … is so outspoken and hits hard at society for its treatment of women. Sahir Ludhianvi had magic in his pen. Thanks, Atul!
