Man mora baawra

“Raagini” (1958) was an Ashok Pictures production. It was directed by Rakhan and the starcast had names like Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar, Jabeen Jalil, Padmini, Nazir Hussain, Achla Sachdev, etc.
I have discussed two fantastic songs from this movie in the past.
Here is yet another song that I thought had already been discussed but I was wrong. This is a very special song and a song that is a trivia buff and a quiz master’s delight. The picturisation shows the stage set for a semi classical song, with Kishore Kumar holding a veena in hand and Padmini as the eager listner/pupil. And the song that follows is a delightful song.
What is different in this song is the voice. It is not Kishore Kumar’s voice, rather it is Rafi’s voice. Kishore Kumar lip syncing in Rafi’s voice is a rare occasion, though it is not the only such occasion. In fact there have been cases when a few other singers other than Rafi too have sung for Kishore Kumar. The name of Manna Dey readily comes to mind. In one case, even Asha Bhonsle has sung for Kishore Kumar. 🙂
Kishore Kumar not singing his own song in this case is not the only unusual thing. O P Nayyar composing an atypical composition like this is also notable. In fact, it was O P Nayyar who dictated that Rafi should sing this song even though Kishore Kumar had sung a few other songs for himself in this movie.
Jaan Nisaar Akhtar wrote the lyrics.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Aif M.

Atul ji,
Playback to Kishore kumar was given by Rafi in 6 songs.Manna Dey has given playback,Asha Bhosle has given playback in Baap re Baap-1955,but a little known fact is that in one film even S.D.Batish has given playback to Kishore Kumar. The film is Bhagam Bhag-1956,the song is “Peene ka maza le” by Rafi and S.D.Batish shot on Bhagwan and kishore kumar respectively.

The second singer sounds like Manna Dey. I may be wrong as it is hard to identify who is singing for whom out of two artists, singing on the stage. They don’t show their faces when the classical/alaap part is going on.

Peevesie’s Mom,
I do not remember now as for which song I had posted the link. Probably, it could be the sad version of ‘chhotaa saa ghar hogaa’ which Hemant Kumar has sung.
Now the video link is available which shows that it is a background song when Kishore Kumar is slowly walking back home when he did not get the job. So, it cannot be regarded as a playback for Kishore Kumar.

Aah! Finally, this song has come here! I have been waiting and waiting for this song – it is one of my favorites, you could almost say it is my No.1 favorite song, just for the memories it evokes. I could go on and on, but I am afraid everyone out here will get bored, so I will say no more, except that the song is out of this world (to my ears). Thanks, Atul!

Although KK a great singer, but beauty of this song is better with Rafi saab.
There are two songs by Asha/KK…(1) mein Bengali chhokara…this duet played in Binaca geetmala for many weeks (2) Yokeling duet (KK & Asha) Mujhko bar bar yad na aa…very refreshing duet…

Kishore is holding a tanpoora in his hand and not a Veena.
for OP Nayyar to have composed a song so heavily based on a classical
raag was indeed remarkable as he was not supposed to have had much
of a classical music training, uunless someone now can clarify.
Can someone please name the raag?

A little known fact about ‘Raagini’ is that the young boy who portrays Kishore Kumar’s ‘bachpan’ is a little Vinod Mehra!
